At what age is it appropriate to just stop trying to be a band?

see topic. I'm asking this because tomorrow night we have a show with 2 bands that are in their late 20s, have crap-*** songs, like seriously crap-*** songs, and are all middle-aged men who still have dreams of being famous. They're not just doing this for fun, they're very serious about it. I almost want to tell them to just stop and do something productive for society but I couldnt because I could see myself being like them in 15 years.

But seriously, if your band isnt going anywhere, when is it appropriate to stop feeding your ego/delusions and just call it quits and try something else?

I say post-25 you're pretty much dead to having a productive career in music unless you actually are writing for yourself, which is usually a lie that people who suck use when they realize their career is non-existant.

There's nothing wrong with being older and still being in a band. As long as the band doesn't completely suck, of course. But if it's not going anywhere for you, make sure you're not trying to make it your day job.

I don't know Schming, I think the story of Guided by Voices disproves that theory. What started as a hobby for a thirty-something-year-old fourth-grade teacher who recorded albums for his friends and family turned into a near legendary underground rock band. I mean, November 12th, 2004 was declared Guided by Voices Day by the mayor of Los Angles when Robert Pollard was forty-seven. How cool is that?

Besides, if you enjoy music, why stop? I know I'm not going to stop making music just because some people deem me too old to be relevant. Screw that.

Yeah, I say as long as you're having fun doing it - why stop? I know one guy who wasn't able to release his debut album till he was 25 and now he's working hard on the second and searching for a new label. In his situation, his career's just begun. And this is a metal band.

If you go into music with the main goal of being famous, I hope you fail. If you do it to have fun and/or just to have an expression of being creative - age should be no limit to it.

So what about people who aren't in a band until they're 30? ARGUMENT FAILED.

And if you're playing for larger reasons than having fun, quit now, imo.

As long as you don't become like Jack Black in School of Rock, you're fine.

Besides, who cares about fame anyway? I respect musicians that make music just for the fun of it far more than those that try to become famous and make lots of money.

If the music is good, that's pretty much all I care about.
