Any tips for and aspiring DJ?

Hi I'm thinking of starting DJing and I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips. So far I'm gonna get a laptop and a bose speaker system and just use Winamp.

I was looking at this speaker system http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/professional/on_stage/speaker_systems/802_deluxe.jsp

or this smaller one http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/professional/on_stage/speaker_systems/802_extended.jsp

BOSE is awful. They don't make sound equipment, they make rubbish. BOSE = Buy Other Sound Equipment.

Also, a laptop is a terrible idea unless you'll have an external sound card, because the audio outs on every laptop are absolutely horrible.

Well, my only tip would be to have a somewhat less lame method of playing music. With Winamp you can't mix songs, which is the whole point of DJing. :p

Yes I'm getting an External sound card, and Its not really the mixing that I'm doing but more of just playing music for a dance and such, but Winamp does have some good plugins so I could proberlly find something that would be more DJish.

But to paraphrase my good friend Ishkur, that's not DJing, that's human jukeboxing. This is DJing. :p

p.s. the above was said in friendly good fun yeah!

If by laptop.. look for a program by Native Instruments called "Traktor DJ Studio"

One of the best mixing programs I have found for pc/laptop.

I use a pair of technics tables for mixing at parties myself but at home stuff I like to mess around on traktor. Easy beat matching. Love it for that but I find it being a little cheesy as to how almost anyone can mix with it. Doesn't show true skill in mixing beats. BUT yeah anyways, look for traktor ;)
Mmmm.

I didn't mean some lame Creative card either, take a look at M-Audio's lineup, they have great stuff on the cheap. Or greater stuff on the not-so-cheap.

Do you know where I can get some technics for cheep? I need technics. :p

By "cheep" I mean, hopefully, below $400 each. Any ideas?

Below $400 will be hard to find especially for the more popular sl1200mk2 model. (best to use imo for those dj'ing at a reasonable price) i usually buy my gear off promoonly.com (i have a subscription there) and off pssl.com

Take a look around. Second choice outside of technics would be numark.

For you, it's under $400 and i'd recommend that.

Not sure if that'll show but try that. If not, just look on pssl.com for the tt-x1

Hope that helped a little.
Mmmm.

Looks interesting. Do you know for a fact that it's good? Because right now I have some of these:

And they're butt crap. Thanks in advances. :)

MUCH better than the PT01, mostly for the fact that it's a direct-drive table and well, you get what you pay for so to say. :P

Yeah, I think I've figured that out at this point >.<

So I could use that for scratching and stuff?

Definitely. :) What type of mixer do you use?
Mmmm.
2005-10-17, 7:51 PM #15
I have a Numark DM1050. Nothing special, but it gets the job done. :)
2005-10-17, 7:55 PM #16
Sure does. I'm hopefully turning my dj'ing career into a business soon and do some dj'ing for parties, schools, etc. through myself and hire others to dj as well. I really want to start a club up here as there's really nothing for clubs. Could make some good money ;)

What types of gigs are you looking to do then? Oh, and what do you mix?
Mmmm.
2005-10-17, 8:00 PM #17
Well, nothing right now. :p But underground hip-hop, trip-hop, electronica and big beat sorts of stuff.

Oh, and dubwise reggae.
2005-10-18, 6:05 PM #18
If you try to get booked at parties and stuff using winamp...it won't happen. Period.

You're not an aspiring DJ, you're an aspiring jukebox (been said, but it's true). I don't mean this offensively, I'm being flat out honest.

If people playing music are in such demand in your area that you can use winamp and get gigs...then that's depressing but big-ups.

At the very least I'd recommend a copy of Traktor DJ Studio...part of DJing is putting on a show. People don't want to look at a guy playing with his laptop dude :-/.

Good luck, if you decide to go another route I could help ya out.

thats not DJing, thats adding random stupid voice wavs to a boring repeating beat, and relying upon the sound of spinning vinyls to make it all "cool".
