Went go go see Les Claypool and his Fancy Band this weekend, amazing show. I'm really suprised we only have so many Primus/Claypool fans here. If you haven't given him a chance, check it out, great musicians.
Anyway, the show was at Lupos on Saturday. A few friends and I went up there, got in kind of late, missed the opening act ( Hella, but I hear they aren't very good anyway). It had been a while since I had been to Lupos, if any of you have heard of it or been there, somewhat of a famous venue. Recently they had some bum-out with their old place, the Heartbreak Hotel, and had to move elsewhere. We get in there, the place has completely changed. It's not the more intimate place it used to be, now theres a nice bar area, tables, different levels, stairs, cool lights. Note that this used to be a great, but piece of **** place.
Besides having no room at all on the floor right next ot the stage, the show was great. It wasn't too loud, nor was I that uncomfortable. The only problem that almost happened were some kids trying to start a mosh pit( luckily, we made sure they stopped). Les and his Fancy band are him on bass, Gabby La La on Sitar/ukalele, Mike Dillon on xylophone and other instruments, Jay Lane (Ratdog) on drums, and Skerik, the most amazing sax player ever :P. Sounds like an interesting group, right?
They were able to do really great renditions of the usual Claypool songs, threw in some of their own stuff too. Les did a few verses of Floyd's "Empty Spaces", then right into a Southbound Pachyderm bit. Later, they went through a great drum/percussion jam, then Les came out and joined with the monkey mask and whamola.
A few songs later, at 10:00 Les comes out and says the next one will be the last, talking about how they were going to turn this place into a disco party. The last song was great, everyone was moving around. Everyone just went nuts, Les looked truly happy, even on stage things were getting through overwhere, going as nuts as we were. Then, at 10:15! they finish, lights go up and the techs start taking everything apart. Les picks up the clock at the end and hold it up. A little over an hour long show, NO ENCORE!? This is a claypool show mind you, they've been known to go to 11-12 at least.
Apparently what happened was when he was talking about the "discoteque", he meant thats when they turned the place into a club, and they had to go, Lupos wouldn't let them play any longer. As soon as it ended, staff were already throwing everyone out. While I don't regret going to the show or paying the $30 it was for the ticket, it was worth it, but still, wouldn't you feel a bit jipped?
It just annoys me this whole new emphasis on clubbing, and the hiphop wave sweeping the country. Even the clubs that were considered the great ones, are all getting commercialized and getting rid of a lot of "rock" shows alltogether. Anyone feeling the same?
