Sepultura is better than Soulfly, anyways.

Amon Amarth, Carcass (Heartwork), Cryonic Temple, Dark Tranquillity, Ensiferum, Enslaved, Norther, Running Wild, and everything else listed in this thread (apart from Monoxide's post).

HooD, you actually like Norther? I saw them live and they were just Bodom but without any of the musical talent, it was just mindless shredding.

I second Sonata Arctica and Edguy.

Detty and Emon know what they are talking about.

Monoxide has no clue.

SONATA ARCTICA.

Yes, I enjoy what I have listened to thus far from Norther. I dunno how Petri Lindroos is going to be for Ensiferum, but he certainly won't match Jari Mäenpää. Which reminds me, check out Wintersun as well.

I agree with Detty.

Except for Dragonforce.

Maybe if you want to listen to the same song over and over. They are good at their instruments, but to play extreme speed metal for every song got old after the first album. Even then, I can't listen to the whole first album all the way through without getting bored.

Unfortunatly, their third album seems more of the same.

Sonata Arctica
Masterplan
System of a Down

Three of the most original rock/metal bands out today.

I bring nothing new to the table, but must highlight Sonata, Nightwish, and Dragonforce.

Pain Of Salvation - Not metal per-se, but prog with a metal influence. check out Remedy Lane, Entropia, or the Perfect Element.

Martyr - Insane band. Warp Zone is their best album, and the title track that gives the tone for the rest of the cd. good stuff, a bit ****ed up but that's always better

Adagio - Power/Prog metal at its finest, not too heavy, not too cheesy, and with a lot of good melodies from incredible musicians.

Jag Panzer - Run of the mill heavy metal band, but with a guitarist so underrated it pisses me off. they're very old school

Iced Earth - uh, you can't ignore them, simply put. No Metallica means iced earth would've taken the torch.

Evergrey - Moody Atmospheric Metal at its finest, with vocals so awesome they make you sing along even when you can't sing.

of course, masterplan, opeth, symphony x, and everything else mentionned (except for monoxide, no hard feelings but this just ain't metal)

I don't know, I don't exactly agree with Mudvayne getting stuck with a Nu-Metal label.

They downtune and don't play solos (at least I haven't heard them play solos) so they get put in the Nu-Metal category.

Metal implies some notion of virtuosic use of instruments, it doesn't necessarily mean solos, it just means the band members aren't just trying to make some songs that reflect their feelings but also songs that are musically very good. It's nothing to do with tuning, a large number of the decent metal bands mentioned in this thread use low tunings.

Does Faith No More count as metal these days? Geesh.

And for some that haven't been mentioned...

Check out some early Suicidal Tendencies, they are my favorite. The later crap is more like punk though, so stay away from that. If you're looking for old metal try Flotsam and Jetsam.

Megadeth has been mentioned already but they are my favorite band so I'll mention them again.

I'm going to check out some of the stuff posted here, too.

Any of the bands posted similar to Megadeth or Suicidal? I'm looking for some of the hard, melodic stuff. Not screaming and wailing gibberish.

What Detty said. Metal != Hair Metal.

Do you know how many power metal bands and prog bands downtune these days? I'm referring to downtuning their guitars - not drop tuning (like drop D, etc)

To say downtuning is nu-metal is stupid.

Currently:
Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Edguy, Gamma Ray, etc all downtune a half step.

Nightwish, Savatage (most of their albums), Mercenary, and others downtune two steps or more.

In fact, the only power metal band I can think of that's used normal tuning all their albums is Rhapsody.

Same with solo's - solo's were awesome - but got overkilled by too many bands thinking they were awesome at solo's and releasing crappy stuff. Solo's can be amazing - but you can't just put a solo in every song.

To me - numetal has a certain sound with the guitars and the singer. Who cares if it has a solo or they downtune. If it works for the song - it works.
2005-11-17, 6:08 PM #32
i find metal is an insanely crappy genre, in which 99% of bands never do anything innovative, they all just make exactly the same music that their influences made... its become so damn hard to find good metal.
2005-11-17, 11:58 PM #33
Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I said downtuning AND (ie: COMBINED WITH) lack of solos defines Nu-Metal. Dream Theater downtunes like nobody's business these days.

So, then, Godsmack would not be numetal in your mind?

I don't know, I've never heard of them.

I'll admit that I wasn't entirely happy with my definition, but I wasn't able to put my finger on exactly what it is that makes something sound like Nu-Metal. There's no denying that they are two of the hallmarks, but there's something else.

LAMB OF GOD, the best [censored] band ever! And then some other awesome bands are System of a Down, Godsmack, Megadeth, Slayer, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slipknot, maybe Children of Bodom (their stuff is good, but I'm not into Swedish black metal, or black metal at all really), Black Label Society, the list goes on.. :D

Ack! Please don't group those two bands together.

Anyway, can't believe no one has mentioned Pantera (or maybe I overlooked it). These guys are (or were :gbk: ) great. Nice southern metal. Anyway, if you're looking for melodic stuff, listen to their "Cemetary Gates", "The Sleep", or "This Love". They also have some great thrash metal songs like "Shattered" and "Cowboys From Hell".
