How much for a good wireless connector?
2005-11-22, 3:26 AM #1
I keep tripping over the damn wires in our small practice room, and when we play on stage I'd like to run around a bit more without worry of unplugging something, so how much would I be spending if I wanted to get a good quality wireless connector for my bass?
Think while it's still legal.

You're better off buying a new bass and a new amp before you think about investing in a wireless gadget, in all seriousness.

but if you're looking for one anyway, go with UHF types.

I see what you are saying, but the bass is good quality and it's in great condition. The amp may be a guitar amp, but it works just fine for practice alone at my house. We have a huge bass amp that we use for band practice and shows in my friends basement.

The only reason you think your bass is good is because you haven't found anything better yet. If you played 10 minutes on my bass, you'd be begging for it.

Also, for wireless, unless you have $1000+, don't bother. You lose way too much fidelity and theres problems with interference in the cheaper models.

Just get longer cords and use tape if you're really THAT crazy.

Heh, I picked up a wireless system for $100 on a 72-hour green-tag sale at guitar center. It's Audio Technica, which I have bad experiences with, so I got it warranted. To my surprise, it works quite well, without even sacrificing tone quality, and hasn't dropped out yet. Battery life seems to be quite well, too. I think it's this one, but without a picture, who the hell knows?

Nonetheless, I'd recommend this or this instead, simply because they're less cumbersome and operate on UHF instead of VHF. More costly, but probably worth it.

And as always, shop ebay for cheaper prices.

Heh, DogSRoOL, thanks for the help...unfortunately I already bought a wireless system. Fortunately it was an audio-technica.

audio-technica wireless guitar system (DR-1500 VHF Wireless System) for $99. It was about $125 after taxes and warranties etc... I was going to get the UHF, but it was $199, and I am trying not to spend a lot of money as I owe my parents about $800 still.

I got home and hooked it up, and damn is it sexy. No feedback at ALL. It sounds better than it did with my cord. I hooked it up near my front door, then I went outside my backdoor and went pretty far into my backyard. You could still hear it. The guy at Guitar Center said it will reach to about 60 feet, but when I tested it, I was going further than that. So far, I can't complain about anything. It was really worth every cent.
Think while it's still legal.

Really? I know their headphones to be of pretty top-notch quality.

In reputation and my own personal experience, Audio Technica have been known to make CRAP low-end products. Two of my mics that were > $70 a piece, were Audio Technicas, after not even a year of use (well-cared for), they decided to stop working. I haven't had any personal experience with the wireless systems, but I'm not going to expect them to be any better.

Take it back, buy some longer cables ( you can get pretty long ones, 20 + feet ), nothing is going to pull anything out if they're long enough. Besides, you aren't playing any huge stages yet, the biggest stages you'll find in Providence aren't going to be bigger than 20 feet across. Save your money, learn to play bass, find a better bass.

Also, using the guitar amp as even a practice amp for your bass will ruin the amp.

^^ So much truth. Learn your instrument before spending money on gimmicks you'll think of useless later on.

and buy a goddamn bass amp, seriously. bands that equip themselves half-arsedly make me uneasy.

There's a pretty big difference between headphones and wireless systems. ;)

Also, my Audio-Technica made a wierd "fuuuf" sound during practice one Wednesday. And then the power supply to the sound system took a crap for no apparent reason while we were playing about an hour later and after about a minute or two kicked back on. I'm not sure if those two things are related. Kinda doubt it, but it's the only thing I've had a problem with... so far. It was being used with my acoustic guitar that night, and it has a pre-amp, so that could've at least accounted for the "fuuuf."

Also, wireless is nice when you're trying to train a sound guy and have practice at the same time. It's fun to run across a room multiple times. :o

You really do get what you pay for. Keep that in mind; you just paid $125 for a wireless system, where decent ones run for $700. They really do suck tone, if you can't hear it, it's not because the system is good, it's because your ears are bad.

Audio-Technica kicks *** in my experience. However, I've never used any of their low-end gear.

Right, I rewire my guitar multiple times a year to change the tone because I can't hear tone differences. I pick out string guages based on tone quality instead of ease of playability because I can't hear tone differences. I always tell my sound guy to change a certain frequency on the sound system because I can't hear tone differences.

It's true. I played the most amazing sounding and easy playing bass EVER at Guitar Center. Never have I heard such perfect tone from a bass. Everything else is just crap now by comparison. :(

Tone sucking shows when using higher gain levels with a distortion you've worked years to achieve. Clean tones aren't really deeply affected, simply because the frequencies work differently compared to mean distorted tone. so when travelling through the millions of air frequencies, clean tones are less prone to destruction.

Not really. Since I'm a clean tone player 90% of the time, I can verifiably say that clean tones are indeed affected by low-quality wireless systems. I had one before that I quit using because it messed with my tone quality. I thought my current one was going to be the same, but it just needed some minor adjustments. My old one didn't have anything to adjust except for one gain control on the transmitter. My new one has 2 gain controls on the transmitter, as well as a hi/lo switch (I don't know what it does exactly). The receiver has a peak indicator that tells when my transmitter has distortion beginning to come through, and an output volume control (which acts as a gain into my effects chain). Given all that, I could achieve a tone quality that was the same as being plugged directly in.

Of course, most guitarists would probably plug it in, see that the tone isn't the same, and say "OMG LEIK THIS SUCKS." Factory settings are not your friend.

Point is - I demand a particular tone from my clean sound(s), and can definitely say that they can be affected by wireless transmission.

most people just don't realize tone = electricity, and since there's no such thing as a perfect conductor, well, tone suckage happens.
