Looking for certain type of music....

I'm listening a lot to Pink Floyd's album 'the division bell' recently. I reaaaaaaaally dig the chilled out songs. You know the type - the chill, ambient, slow tempo (guitar) solos, no voice.

What I'm wondering is:

-Is there a name for this genre?
-Do you guys have any recommendations in this genre?

Thanks :) :) :)

I can't give any specific answer, but I'd suggest going to allmusic.com and search on pink floyd, then on the pink floyd page see which artists are listed by influenced by/followers/Similar Artists.

There's a genre called Ambient. Mostly mellow, ambient noise and stuff.
There's also DownTempo/Trip Hop which some artists mix with ambient for good noise.

I recommend Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works. A 2 disc album of pure ambience.

(division bell rocks btw)

early pink floyd is sometimes called space rock, you might like more of that

And I don't really know anything more about it than earlier pink floyd

If you want solos.......Steve Vai is your man. I think he has some slow songs.

Maybe we could just all make up our own instrumental stuff and give it to Tenshu. :o

Steve Vai is not what he's after. While good, he is nothing like Pink Floyd.

I thought Progressive Rock was more accurately the genre's name. Looking up Ambient will just give you percussionless electronic mood music. I think you'd like some of the earlier works by Yes (Relayer), Rick Wakeman (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Alan Parsons (Tales of Mystery and Imagination). Also, if you like solos like that, you really wanna listen to more blues.

Hardly, progressive really refers to a much larger group. Floyd IS prog, but so is King Crimson, Rush, Tool, Can, etc, not exactly ambient solos :P. It's a lot more misleading than searching for "ambient" music.

There really is no set genre for what you're looking for, plenty of artists have similar works to what you're describing. As far as Floyd goes, you can find much better and much more than just Division Bell. You might want to check these other guys out as well, some aren't exactly vocal-less, but great and really chilled out.

Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Floyd - Welcome to the Machine
Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive
Floyd - Echoes (pt. 1)
Floyd - Saucerful of Secrets
Floyd - One of these Days
NIN - La Mer
Oysterhead - Radon Balloon
Meat Puppets - Aurora Borealis
Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Radiohead - Sail to the Moon

I could be completely wrong as to what you're looking for, but you might want to check out Sigur Ros.

I misread the OP. Thought he was looking for ambient kinds of music in general. :o
