They don't have a single bad song. Fact. In fact, I can't choose between albums, Winterheart's Guild has their most popular song though.

I prefer their newest one.

If you're into a more speed metal, typical power metal type songs - their first two are the way to go.

Their third is very very vocal oriented - the guitars are very hidden in that album

Their fourth is just a damn good album . Good chorus work, good guitars, good melodies, and not a Stratovarius clone. Plus has some of their best songs "Don't Say a Word" and "White Pearl, Black Oceans"

Their last album is definitely one of their finest pieces of work.

However, Silence has a special place in my heart.

I just got some out of curiosity, you all seem to like them a lot. Are they supposed to sound like a opera/musical but........metal......with synths?

If your going to get some Sonata Arctica as a beginner, start of with songs like Wolf and Raven, Replica, Shamandalie, My Selene, Full Moon, My Land, and 8th Commandment. Those songs give a broad range of their style and abilities. Thats how I got into them, and then found that I liked every single song theyve ever written.

For guitar badassness, pick up songs like Revontulet, Mary Lou, Champagne Bath, Picturing the Past, Kingdom for a Heart, Silver Tounge.

Damn. I'm absolutely in love with this band's sound, even after just listening to some samples. I cannot wait to get one of their albums.:)

Everyone i've shown them to has really loved them. Even my dad. :p

Anyway, Ecliptica is my favourite album and i think it's the easiest to get into.
