Achieving Feedback with low-volume restrictions

Is there a way (or pedal) that will enable me to achieve feedback that "builds up" naturally? Since I don't use an amp and play in a mostly low-volume situation, I can't really get a decent volume to get feedback (unless I get really close to a monitor). I can get something somewhat similar by placing a volume pedal before distortion and hitting a natural harmonic and turning up the volume. Unfortunately, that won't work if I want longer periods of feedback. Plus that's way to cumbersome.

I could also use some tips on getting feedback naturally, since I'm not really sure how to control it in the first place.
