So i'm cleaning my room today. Tearing everything apart, I basically havent thrown anything away in 18 years. I come across this beat up CD-R with the words "OK COMPUTER" scribbled on it. "WTF?" I said. I'm very curious, so I popped it into my computer to find out that it was an audio CD. Yanked it, stuck it in my stereo, and listened. And listened. And listened. An hour later I was in awe. Where did this CD come from? Who made it for me? Damn these guys aint bad!

I did some research and now I know a bit more about it, but I still have no memory of where I got this CD that was on my closet floor under a huge pile of junk, obviously somewhat old (for a CD-R) and in perfect playing condition.

My sister has a huge CD collection so the only thing I can gather is that it was something she made and it somehow got in my room into my closet. I will soon be snooping through her room to see if I can find the original.

I know i'll probably get laughed at (or worse) for not knowing about it sooner, I dont know how it happened. I love music.

I love this album now, any other recomendations that are similar that I may not have heard about?

Ok Kiddo.

That album is one of the top 10 albums I own. Radiohead is amazing.

Anyways, other stuff you should check out if like that album...

Doves - Last Broadcast (either the song or the album)
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (or the song Are You a Hypnotist?)
The Futurists - Last Stand or Candle Light (ha, couldnt resist)
Jump, Little Children - Vertigo (the album, or just the song Mother's Eyes)
Muse - Showbiz (album, song Unintended... but I like all of their stuff, some of it is a bit cheezy though)
Ours - Distorted Lullabies (song Fallen Souls. OH MY GOD THIS SONG GIVES ME CHILLS!)
South - With the Tides (song Loosen Your Hold)
Sovus Radio - The Announcer/Western Apocalypse (if you like Radiohead AND Led Zeppelin... I love these guys. They're fun when drunk and Aquateen is on)
Starsailor - Love is Here (album, but song I would say Tie Up My Hands)

maybe Wilco...

i dunno, that's my list

but i would also recommend any of Radiohead's other albums, namely Hail to the Thief and Kid A.

You have been blessed by the musical Gods :)

If you like the weirder parts of the album, check out Kid A. If you like the more rocking moments, try The Bends. Some tracks to sample would be Everything In Its Right Place, How To Dissapear Completely, or The National Anthem from Kid A; Street Spirit, High & Dry, or the title track from The Bends.

Actually if you really like OK Computer just go out and buy The Bends right freaking now. It is IMO the best Radiohead album, and hell, one of the greatest ever albums.

Ok Computer is great, but Kid A will take you on a ride you've never had. The entire album is perfect.

Wow, so you just heard Paranoid Android for the first time? I remember that experience, it was amazing. An instant favorite of mine, definitely.

I heard Paranoid Android for the first time once, didn't like it. Still don't.

This brings me back. It really does. I was in the same boat about two years ago. Get them all. There are six, it doesn't really matter which order, but I would suggest The Bends first. Kid A and Amnesiac may seem really different the first time through but it REALLY grows on you. It's my favorite CD I have, had, and probably ever will have. (Kid A, that is.)

Anyway, if you really like OK Computer that much with your first listen you should immediately go and get more. (It took me a long time to get into it after my friend gave me the CD. First song to jump at me was Lucky.) And actually buy the CDs, not because I work for the RIAA, but because you want the album art.

And Spork, you forgot Pyramid Song!! An absolutely defining Radiohead song.

BTW, IMHO:

Kid A > OK Computer > Amnesiac > Hail To The Theif = The Bends > Pablo Honey

We all already know that you don't like Radiohead, so was it really necessary to come in here and take a dump on everyone's fun?

As for Dash...
If you are into the more atmospheric tracks on OK Computer, then check out Sigur Rós' album Ágætis Byrjun (you can download two sample tracks here. Enjoy!).

Well actually, I was kind of hoping someone would explain to me what's good about Radiohead because quite frankly i'm kind of sick of being surrounded by people that I just don't understand the music tastes of.

But thanks for jumping to conclusions about what my intentions were Columbo, i'll be sure to watch your show.

Yes Pyramid Song rules, but it's on Amnesiac and I was talking about Kid A and The Bends ;)

I think you were too subtle, then. If you come into a thread about Radiohead and simply state, "I don't like Paranoid Android," few people are going to interpret that as, "will someone explain Radiohead's appeal to me?" Maybe I'm wrong and I missed the subtext or something. ;)

Personally, I think one of Radiohead's greatest strengths is their ability to establish moods and atmospheres in their songs and across albums. They use texture very well to create dark, interesting songs. Radiohead's more poppy work (mostly from earlier in their career) also showcases some really great melodies. Their emphasis on texture over virtuosity is perhaps what results in the disparity between your tastes and your peers'. I don't intend to put words in your mouth, but judging from your past musical discussions it seems that you highly value virtuosity in music (and there is certainly nothing wrong with that).

Probably true. As long as nobody is confusing virtuosity with playing-really-fast-oh-god-his-fingers-have-fallen-off. The problem is that there is so much music around consisting of the frontman moaning into microphones to an intentionally off-key melody that it's easy to just assume that the singer isn't very good.

At least when the music is melodic (I don't mean technical, what I listen to is far from the most technical out there - I draw the line when it's fast-without-melody) it's easier to work out what's going on. I prefer to not need the album booklet open to work out what the singer is singing. I mean the reason I like Sonata Arctica so much isn't because they're technically very good, but because I love the moods and feelings the songs cause.

Thom Yorke (Radiohead lead singer) doesn't sing like that in all of the songs. He can actually have a very good and clear voice, he just finds singing like that all the time boring. Although I also think he makes the moaning work very well. You really can't judge the band by Paranoid Android, even if it is one of their great songs. And as far as alot of music being like that, well I have yet to hear a band like Radiohead, or someone sing like Thom Yorke.

If you like Radiohead, you'll love Muse. Showbiz, their first album, is probably as close to OK Computer as I can get you, but Origin of Symmetry, Hullabaloo and Absolution are also well worth a look.

Muse and Radiohead are far different from eachother. The only real similarity is the likeness of the lead singer of Muse to Thom Yorke, and Muse's rip off of Radiohead's sound. I'm a pretty big Radiohead fan myself, and I really don't like Muse. A lot of people are into them I hear, but I still don't see the appeal.
2006-01-20, 4:03 PM #21
I like Muse but don't like Radiohead, so they clearly aren't that similar

They only have a few similarities. I think Radiohead goes into "uncharted territory" more than Muse. I still like Muse, but no where near as much as Radiohead.

listen to Kid A and The Bends, they are both ultimate funk.
2006-01-20, 6:16 PM #24
Muse are like a slightly guitar heavier version of The Bends era Radiohead with a tiny electronica edge. They didnt take that mega-weird turn like Radiohead did after OK Computer.

Lead singer Matt Bellamy is a musical genious. Not only does he e write all the songs, but he sings and plays the guitar and piano, often all on the same track. Even in live performances.

One of the reasons Paranoid Android is so good is because it's actually several different songs combined into one. Songs written like this often turn out "greater than the sum of their parts".

I had a similar experience. I was listeing to this "Top 100" solo list. And I got to #30, which was a guy named Joe Satriani. I had never heard of him before. So I listened to the song "Surfing with the Alien", and I remain floored. This guy has got to be one of the best guitarists of all time. I can't belive I've never heard of him.
