Punk music...

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Bad Religion, NoFX, MXPX, Thrice, and some Dead Kennedy's. I haven't really listened much to punk, and usually thought it was kind of dumb until I really started listening to it. I love it now, and can't seem to get enough.

Could you please suggest me some good punk bands. Here is what I'd prefer:

1. I'd like it not to be that uber popular stuff like Green Day
2. If you know of some older punk bands, around when punk started, that would be nice too. I like to listen to music and find out where the genre started from and how it compares to now.
3. Stuff that's nowadays.

Thanks a lot. And If you just come to this thread and go around *****ing about how much you hate punk or how much it sucks...well I don't really want that. I'd just like to learn a bit more about punk rock, not how much you hate it.
Very funny Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

Here are some great punk/punk-related/not-exactly-punk-but-I-like-them bands that you should check out:

Old:
The Clash (I particularly enjoy London Calling)
Devo (their Q: Are We Not Men? album)
The Ramones
Gang of Four
The Talking Heads (one of my all-time favorite bands. Their early albums were associated with punk, but their later stuff branched out a lot)

A more modern punk band that I enjoy is the Suicide Machines. Their best album is their debut, Destruction by Definition. It's got more of a ska-punk feel to it, though.

That's just what I can think of off the top of my head. I'll post some more later if I think of anything.

I should have mentioned I've been listening to the Suicide Machines for quite a while now. Very good band, I like them a lot.

I'll be sure to look into those ones. Thanks man. :)

I would only say some of these bands are really "punk" in the popular sense, but they've all had a huge impact on shaping/starting punk. You should really check out all these guys if you don't know them, they're all great.

Stooges ( Iggy Pop )
MC5
Lou Reed
Germs
Butthole Surfers
Suicide

EDIT: If you're looking for more bands that were the real punk "forerunners", do a google on artists who played at CBGB's in the late 60's/ early 70's.

PLEASE, if there's one punk band you are to listen to, listen to Dillinger Four. This band, to me, epitomizes freaking awesome punk rock at its best. They're a new band compared to the classic punk bands, but these guys kick way more *** than the Dead Kennedy's ever did. Listen to the album Versus God, which is one of the best punk albums ever made, period. Fast, catchy as hell, angry, and full of kickass melodies. Listen to the songs Maximum Piss And Vinegar, Suckers Intl. Has Gone Public, and Shiny Things Is Good.

The Vandals remind me of The Pixies...except better.

Thanks guys, this was really helpful. I'm leavin for Oklahoma (gotta do some motocross. we're driving out there because they have some wicked tracks and it's great early practice for the upcoming season) so I'm going to be throwing all of those bands onto my mp3 player. Lots of time to check 'em out, and I already have been listening to quite a few of them. Very good stuff.

Thanks a lot. :)

High five for naming bands that people don't think of as punk!

Also, judging from the one song I've heard, The Hives fall in this category.

There are some aussie punk bands rolling around as well. Two that I would suggest are Frenzal Rhomb and the Living End. The Living End's earlier stuff is more punk/rockabilly/psychobilly, but now they're just a rock band - try aim for their earlier stuff. Songs like Prisoner of Society, Second Solution, Roll on, West End Riot, Monday, Save the day.

Oh, and Frenzal Rhomb kinda just wanna offend people, well, in a lot of the songs they try to. Give em a listen - they're a lot of fun.
