Why do people like Rush?

Honestly. What are their best albums/songs?
2006-02-02, 2:47 AM #2
The little keyboard bit in Tom Sawyer.

Why do people like Rush? That's a silly question. There's no reason to like ANY genre of music, just it being your opinion.

Rush? If that's the band who had washing machines on some of their concerts, yeah, they had some funky music.

I like Rush because their music is complex (which is the reason I don't like hip hop or rap), they've got one of the best drummers, and quite simply their music sounds great.

Good rap is mind-****ingly complex.

Rush > *

Geddy Lee = Great bassist
Neil Peart = Great drummer
Alex Lifeson = Great guitarist

Rush + bad acid = Primus = greatness :o

Tom Sawyer
Spirit of Radio
Freewill
Cinderella Man
etc.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Now, I'm not just talking about lyrics. I mean bass, rythym, the whole shebang. Hearing the same drum beat over, and over, and over again without any fills or solos is just depressingly boring.

I dont think he was just talking about the lyrics either :p

[EDIT]

Okay, how about you just listen to this here MP3. IIRC, it has all live instruments and two solos. :p

Also some swear words maybe so watch out kiddies.

Because their music sounds great. Why do you listen to what you listen to? People have different musical tastes. I'm not referring to anyone specific, but many of you folks need to realize that you're young and that you're going thru musical phases. Chances are the crap that you love so much now will begin to irritate you as you grow older. I grew up on rap music in the 80's and 90's and hate it so much now that I avoid MTV and BET like the plague. I was the biggest Nirvana fan before the fanboys took over, and now I can't tell the difference between Kurt Cobain's vocals and someone's nails running down a chalkboard.

Rush / Working Man
Rush / Fly By Night
Rush / Tom Sawyer

The above are some of their more popular songs. They're a group of talented musicians who work very well together, and whether you can relate to the music or not, denying that fact is to live in denial. Just like I see that there is talent in the track that Thrawn posted, I'm unable to relate to the style and find it irritating to listen to.

Another example of ignorance on rap music in general.

People like Rush because Lee is an excellent bass player, lifeson is an amazing guitarist, and pert (sp) is quite possibly the best drummer ever.

The vocals suck ***, though.

Nah, just another example of personal preference on the crap that is popularized and forced into my ears. The song that was linked was actually one of the better rap songs I've heard...too bad they don't have that playing on every radio station.

Not every song though. I love the vocals on Seven and Seven is.

That's because it doesn't sell. A lot of hip-hop fans prefer 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg over quality music.
2006-02-04, 2:56 AM #23
I think the Rush vocals are pretty good...I mean, nothing incredible, but Lee's voice has character, which happens to fit the Rush style quite well. It's just something you come to expect when listening to Rush.

Also, the whole Neil Peart-is-the-best-****ing-drummer-ever thing is a big part of it.

Then don't generalize that as rap as a whole.

I absolutely loathe bands with screaming vocals. What appeal it has to anyone is totally beyond me.

I did at first--then I got past that and realized the bands usually have great non-screaming vocals, and amazing guitar/drumwork.

If you want to listen to some more complex music from Rush, get 2112. One of the underrated classics.
