Against Me! have done the unthinkable...

I'm sure there are some Against Me! fans here who would like to hear this. AM! recently signed to... a major label. *GASP* Sire Records to be precise, which has housed The Ramones, The Replacements, and The Cure among others. They're owned by Warner Bros.

I'm torn. This is one of my favorite punk bands, so it makes me uneasy about this decision. On one hand, I'm proud of them, and I'm glad they're getting what they deserve, as they deserve it more than any other band out there right now. They worked hard to get to this point.

On the other hand, why did they sign to a major at all? They were fine on Fat Wreck... they had good distribution deals, and they were in no way hindered in making their music. I can see no other motive other than making more money, which really bothers me. This is the band that said they want to play loud and hard every night, and don't care how many people show up at the door. They practically sold their principals and morals to this major label. I'm sure the new CD (due out in 2007) will be good, but for what price? It's changed from making music for the love of it... to a career.

I mean, wouldn't it be weird to have Against Me! as a nominee for "best new artist" at the Grammy's?

Oh well. I'm still seing them in DC with Alkaline Trio. :D

I am confused as to how you cannot have a carrer in music and love making it.
Epstein didn't kill himself.

The music has to do with their morals though. Which was ABSOLUTELY anti-Big Label. They signed to a big label.

They all sell out sometime--it's just a matter of time. Sad, but I knew the only Punk band I liked would be lost to me someday.

Did any of you read my post at all? At the end of the day, I don't really care... hell, I'm going to their concert, and I've supported them for a long time.

However, if you knew anything about this band, you would know they've always been against corrupt corporations and have always had anarchist views. I care for this band's integrity, and only an idiot wouldn't "give a ****", especially for an anarchist punk band that might be making a mistake.

It's not that big of a deal, but in the end, their music will probably be affected, and that's something I definitely don't want. They've compromised themselves.

and they probably got tired of eating PBJs in the back of their tour van. Seriously, unfortunately not many of your favorite bands live above the poverty line, no matter how "big" they may seem to you. Pretty much the only ones that I know of who are comfortable are those on major labels whose videos you see on MTV TRL & MTV2 every day.

Many many many smaller bands are just eeking by and living like college students for their entire life just because they "love what they do" and have made mistakes like writing bad songs or just not playing the industry correctly and being written-off. No one, not even college students like living like college students. So... Why can't people opt to be rewarded and enjoy their life and their music without being called sellouts?

My band just got offered an indie label deal and the advance (+ free van + free hotel rooms on the road) they were offering sounded awesome... until you realize that you have to pay for recording out of that + support yourself and 3 other people off of it until you pay it back. I would've been making the same had I dropped out of school and worked at Starbucks full time (which I quit, thank God).

Of course, it has the appeal of not having to work (aside from writing new material)... so it's not like I've turned it down just yet.

All you know about me is what I’ve sold you, dumb ****.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record, dip ****,
And you bought one.

Haha. Good thing MY favorite bands will never sell out.

R-right?

Anyone who says "OMG GIVE THEM A BREAK THEY'RE A BAND" is obviously ignorant of the entire MENTALITY behind Against Me!

It has nothing to do with them growing as a band--you can do that on indy labels. Look at Atmosphere and Sage Francis--still on the Rhymesayers label and STILL growing in popularity and whatnot.

It has everything to do with them selling their souls to a big corporation, something they've always been against.
