Any sax players?
2006-02-10, 4:39 AM #1
I'm in love with the sound of the thing. And I have been since I could remember.

How hard is it to learn?

My older brother used to play. And we have two alto's in the basement. A learners cheapo dealie, and another my mother played about 3-4grand for that he hasn't really touched.

Any info would be appreciated.

(Sure I could wikipedia it, but the human experience means more when it comes to music!)

I played Alto and Barritone Sax as a youngster for about 5 years, but I became bored with it and begun to despise the sound. My favorite song to play on the Sax was the theme music from Bruce Lee's Fist Of Fury. The cool thing about learning Alto is that it makes it incredibly easy to play Barritone as well. Tenor, however, is quite a bit different.

I learned to play on an alto in grade school, and then played tenor through middle/high school. It's really fairly easy to learn, and if you already know how to read music, then it'll be even easier.

Good, because I know how to read music.

So I suppose I should seek some form of formal lessons?

Nah. The sax is one of the easiest woodwinds to play. If you were playing a clarinet or something similar I'd recommend lessons, but with a sax you can pretty much teach yourself, since you know how to read music. I've played the alto since I was 10, the tenor since I was 16 and the baritone since I was 14. If you ever have the chance to get your hands on a bari, I'd highly suggest it over the other two common ones; I think it sounds the best of all of them (plus is makes for the easiest slap-tonguing).

If I remember correctly, a simple Recorder (I think that's what they're called), even shares many of the same finger positions/notes as a Sax.

Well its pretty much free to try..

All I have to do is take it to be sanitized and to make sure anything else doesn't need replacing.

Depends on how much you're willing to practise, and if you can play in any sort of band. If you can put in 3-4 hours a day and are able to find a group (doesn't really matter what type of music) to play with you'll see some big improvements and you'll get a lot out of it.
