Unexpected Gold

I've been looking for a new hook. I scoured pandora hoping to find some new band to attach myself to. Regina Spektor was the closest I got, but I just couldn't get into her stuff half of the time.

My dad listens to a lot of country. I hate anything post Garth Brooks' era, so I tend to shut the door and crank Modest Mouse in the muff-phones. I like a very few of his songs, and will listen to them when he plays them. In particular, Alison Crouse [sp?] or anything bluegrass catches my ear immediatly. A few months ago he played "When in Rome" - Nickel Creek. Mind you, I've heard some of their other stuff and loved it. It renewed my interest, and I got ahold of their latest album.

Wow. Gold.
Pure. Gold.

Not SF_Gold - Gold, I'm talking Fort freaking Knox Gold. A RadioHead cover, Incubus-esque lyrics, bluegrass influences, and a very prominent indie undertone. I'm telling you, amazing. It's got everything I love about all of my favorite bands. It's fantastic.

List YOUR unexpected gold. Where did you find one of your favorite bands, and how was it surprising?

I found The Herbaliser on iTunes. Not too much of a surprise but it was still pretty cool. :p

I was looking for a concert to go to while I was stateside in Boston for a week over Christmas break, and the only concert in town was The Street Dogs, The Ducky Boys, and others. I hadn't heard of either band, but it turned out that both were absolutely amazing bands. Rock!

The Jesus Lizard. First heard them in Clerks, and for whatever reason I took a liking to them.

When I was younger, I thought the Beatles was sappy old people music. Then I heard Revolution on the radio. Now, they're my favorite band, and classic rock stations are all I listen to on the radio. It completely changed my view of music.

A great find by both my mate and my sister. I'd recommend getting your hands on Creepin' Up The Backstairs.
