Sampler: Worth the purchase?

I’m considering buying a sampler, specifically an E-mu esi-32. I found what I think to be a good deal on one. However, I’ve never used a sampler before and I’m curious as to whether it’s worth the money. What can a sampler do that a laptop cannot, in terms of manipulating sound and what such? I’d be interested in using it in a recording setting as well as live performance.

Has anyone used samplers before and can vouch for their usefulness? Thrawn[numbarz] perhaps? I know you're interested in electronic music. I’ve Googled for information, but I thought I’d get a Massassian opinion before making my decision.
