I've been meaning to bring this up for a while, but are there any metalheads out there? If so, would type do you like? Personally, I enjoy the genre in the greater sense, with Thrash and Speed Metal taking the lead with Power and Progressive falling just behind. I don't especially care for the new stuff, especially the metalcore, nĂ¼ metal, or whatever that stuff with the emo lyrics is called. Also, what does this music do for you? Do you listen merely for fun, or does it have some deeper meaning for you?

And if you're interested, a local radio station in my city does a metal show that starts a half hour from the time of this posting. (11:00 PM, North American Central Standard)

(On the other hand, it's a fine radio station regardless- one of the few true community-produced radio stations in the country, and has a little something for everybody.)

Enjoy, and let the discussion commence. I'm curious to hear what you've got to say about all this.

I'm definitely a metalhead. I grew up listening to classic rock and my listening gradually progressed until I started listening to metal. I'm the only person I know whose favorite genres are classic rock and metal; least around here.

I'm a melodic death metal person myself; I love Gothenburg style metal. In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Opeth, and The Haunted are all in my top metal bands. Children of Bodom falls in there for me too, but most seem to have a hard time classifying them. Progressive probably follows, along with trash/speed and power. Into Eternity is one of my favorites; I have yet to hear anybody who sounds like them. I just recently got into Blind Guardian; "A Twist in the Myth" is just kickass. Strapping Young Lad, Megadeth, Nevermore, Dragonforce, Evergrey, Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Kataklysm, Shadows Fall, and Exodus are some of my other favorites.

I've never really gotten into real death metal though, with the possible exception of Amon Amarth (more viking metal), Behemoth, and Nile. I prefer their melodic counterparts rather than death metal's brute force method.

That's funny you should say that Into Eternity is one of your favourites- I actually went to school with their last drummer (Sagan) for about four to five years. He was a good friend, but I've not been in contact with him for a while.

Blind Guardian is a lot of fun. I'm not so sure what I think of their latest yet- perhaps it will grow on me. They seem to have lost something else along with Thomen Stauch. But who knows? Maybe they'll all regroup in a few years as Iron Maiden has and return full force to rock our faces off. If you like the latest album, I'd reccomend checking out A Night at the Opera and Nightfall on Middle Earth. But personally, I like their first two albums the best. (Although Nightfall really is something. Try listening to it in conjunction with reading "The Silmarillion" sometime. I was amused with how clever it was. (Not to mention how nerdy, ha.))

I love metal, but I think tech-metal has demanded most of my music attention lately. Into the Moat and The Faceless have been invading the ears of my room mates at least once a day for the past few months.

Hell yes.

I'm not really specific about it, as long as there's a sense of melody and it ain't no emo crap (or even worse; nu-metal). In effect, my taste goes from powermetal such as Sonata Arctica, Kamelot and Masterplan, to the more raw and heavy sounds as Opeth, Andralls, Arch Enemy and Demonhunter. Anything with a soprano vocalist, like Epica or Tristania, also has a special place in my heart. Doesn't go for Evanescence, but then again, Evanescence sounds like ****.

I'm also quite a sucker for powerballads. Katatonia's 'My Twin' and Demonhunter's 'My Heartstrings Come Undone' are amazing.

I clicked that stream and it's some crappy bluegrass crap.

Yeah, the show is over. Try Monday, 11 PM CST.

Edit: And like I said- something for everybody. If you can think of it, that station probably plays it.

I listen to a lot of Metal and Classic rock generically and this is variant range from Motorhead, Slayer and Sepultura. Of course the list ends there, but in recent weeks I seem to be listening to Type O Negative (which is quite unique to other forms of metal) and veering to the rocky aspects namely with Voivod (yep sounds weird too). I listen to all kinds really, but found Death Metal something difficult to get into.

I tend to like those bands who make a good sound with drumming and riffage and this applies to most bands. Riffage is what gets me to really judge a band, and from the view of a budding guitarist it is a key element .

As long as it is argressive, riffy, raw and musically sound - I'll like it. :)

Metal is my life now lol. I like mostly Thrash and Progressive metal, but I find myself listening to Death and Black more as of late. I really cant stand nu-metal though, it just doesnt sound good to me. Maybe it's because I play guitar and realize how little effort it takes to write a nu-metal song lol.

My top ten favorite metal bands are:
Metallica, Slayer, Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, Kataklysm, Mastodon, Trivium, Rammstein, Nevermore, and Megadeth. Not necessarily in that order. :P

I'm rather fond of progressive metal and death metal. My favorite two bands are Opeth and Pain of Salvation.
