Composition time

hey guys. i started composing with my bandmates now and this is what we're working on.

it's a very early demo. my drummer hasn't put his touch on it yet. and more keyboard needs to be composed as well as a bass line. but it's the first time i composed in a while. give me some input!

also, what kind of vocals do you guys see on that? i'd like sung mostly, but with a manly voice ala symphony X or something like that. iced earth would work too. but you know, opinions!

thanks :D

I'd love to hear a really high chorus sound. Something like choir music.

I like it, but it's a little too [something] for me. I don't know enough about music termonology to say what it is, though.

Sounds so much better than the midi you let me hear the other day. :P

As for vocals I'm not so sure.
nope.

Sounds like a carnival in the beginning. In my head I am hearing some really light register, off-key (purposefully) crooning.

I think there is already a lot going on. Almost seems like an instrumental to me. at this point. Adding another voice for voice (hehe) IMO would make it a bit crowded in some spots. The "heaver" portions could probably hold up a melody for voice but the beginning seemed "full" as it were, and might do fine as an instrumental intro.

Of course, that's really referring more to arrangement than the actual song and vocal style. In my feelings it's a really off center song-tonally, it has a kind of rhythym where it feels like it is wobbling between tone centers, as well as the rhythmic material you have going on. I don't have the time to analyze it, mostly cus my mad ear skillz aren't that leet anymore, so there may be a very good reason for that and that may be what you were going for.

So I imagine that someone singing this might be having a nervous breakdown and mildly hallucinating circus clowns and a nightmarish funhouse. At least, those are the visuals I get in my head with this song. Thats my opinion.

Neat piece though.

there are several key changes. i'm moving in a general A minor direction for intro. varying between phrygian dominant sounds. stuff like that. then a drastic shift to E minor for a more verse like thinger. descent in B harmonic minor, i guess. and that's basically the keys i think. few passing tones here and there. and of course a b minor chorus :D

rythmic wise, it's not really that complicated. it's all based around the 1-2 feel of a 6/8 beat. except when my drummer will be done the backbeat will have alot more life to it.

Mmk. Now I can play along without that dreadful work of transcribing from scratch.

Can't wait to hear the drummer's touches. The radio at work only plays pop punk and I am growing weary of the machine gun snares in common time. It's just maddening, but it makes music with different feels seem a lot more awesome.

Pretty nice.. I get a real Symphony X vib when listening to it. Vocals wise Iced Earth would be awesome, depends on what singer you are talking about though...

If you can pull off Barlow's high notes I wanna hear it.. :awesome:

A mix between SYmphony X styled singing, and a female vocalist might work well for it too. SOmething along the lines of Lacuna COil, where a female voice would especially complement the intro.

Can't be that in-depth, though, I'm at work and only have a low-quality on-board mono speaker.

well. we have a 7 piece. 2 guitars, one bass, one drum, keyboard, and 2 singers, one male and female. along with 2 back vocals. so it could work.
