New Animations in JO (For real this time)!
2003-05-13, 3:11 PM #1
I'm showcasing this on behalf of the AotC TC. The program and shots are from Wudan. Remember Wudan? They guy who made the rotating door that nobody cared about? And only I believed in him? Well, just look NOW, ph00bs! He showed you! MUHAHAHA!

Anyway...

For those of you too lazy to click the link, I'll post the pics.

Very, very cool.. sucks that the Bryar model is ridiculously large, even if it has no bearing on the animation.

I can't wait till it works enough to make real, full animations. Should be soon.

I think the reason it looks so stiff and static is that Jan's foot is not bent; as of now, she's doing a kind of tippy-toe thing that looks unnatural.

But that's not the point. The point is that wudan is god. That is all.

ROFL!
2003-05-14, 3:12 AM #15
A func_door_rotating is something I coded a long time back, it's a tut at Code3Arena, the very first coding I ever did for anything, ever. I'm not sure if we'll use it in AotC:mp but it'll be in the code, along with ladders, at least to entice mappers into mapping for it when it's released. Oh, one other thing, remember that darn "surfaceparm metalsteps" problem? I fixed that in code as well. Basically, I want AotC to be the thing people want to map for.

This animation thing is really my holy grail - I'm not an animator and I know it is too little too late, but I have to finish it. Now that the reverse engineering's hard part has been done, Emon is correct, it is a very good possibility for me to study animation formats (so far, it looks like I could use 3ds, Milkshape, or even GMax, because they all have the same basic structure) and implement a conversion utility, or a set of utilities.

The cool thing, IMHO, is that it 'couldn't be done', and now it can with some moderate success. I'll be polishing it up and uploading the working product soon, I still think it's hard to do, but that anim took about 20 minutes, it's just one frame, though. I need to write a 'frame generator', so you give it two frames and it makes up the frames that go between.

In any case, the future looks bright. Aren't you glad I almost entirely have stopped trying to map?

I just re-read Thrawn's post - I don't want you guys to get the wrong idea, those shots are from Modview. I devised a pretty quick setup to generate the GLA and open Modview to view the model, then I go back and tweak a little in a script file I wrote to describe the orientation of the bones, which I feed to GlaNeo (the name of the Gla generating program) who then reads it, generates the quaternions, et cetera, automatically figures out how much shift is required to make the animation look normal and the end result is a rotated bone, and all it's children (real, or otherwise) line up in similar fashion.

Basically, I took the process from the pain in the butt process of manually hex editing stuff, down to writing a script that doesn't need much more than a new pitch, yaw, and roll, which any modelling program should be able to provide, I hope.

Any chance of being able to animate completly new skeletons?

That's already possible, I believe.

GlaNeo already does it, too. I could make a new ATST animation, if'n I needed to, I reckon.

Does this mean I can port my Destroyer Droid character from Q3 and into JO as a new SP enemy? If so what tools would I need, other than Max and GlaNeo?

HEY! You're not the only one who liked those rotating doors. I used that cog awhile back to make my jail cell's doors open. I even posted it in the forums!

Yeah. Wudan mentioned Azymn is using the emplaced gun sitting animation for that, which is very clever. However, that animation causes the guns to angle up, as you can see. Please don't post other work on a Showcase thread.

I really wonder why you're wasting your time to do this...

In more than 5 years, NO TC ever get completed...and this one won't be completed beacause of future boring for your project...sorry for my pessimist point of vue...

by the way...JO sucks

"Future boring for our project?" What the hell?

Anyway, look at Counter-Strike, Quake Fortress, Urban Terror, and Desert Combat. The ones that aren't finished are well on the way to completion.

EDIT: How did I forget RoX?

Go find out what "RoX" is. Open mouth, insert foot; it was a TC made by a team Grismath led for the most of its development. And it would be available for download if the files weren't down.

1. TCs have been completed.

2. It's not a TC. You don't even know what it is, so why don't you keep your mouth shut?

3. Won't be completed? Again, you don't know what the hell you're talking about to begin with, so that statement is void.

4. Learn to spell.

Ok, well, AotC will be completed by what will be regarded as a miracle. But that's not really what this thread is about.

THIS screenie is what it is about. I've been doing bug fixes and whatnot for the last day or so (not to mention Pwning newbs in ET) ...

The rotating door I worked on was just per Code3Arena's tut, plus I had to modify a few things for Raven's b0rk3d Quake3 QVM code.

I don't really care for JK vs JO debates. I've never played JK, and I probably won't, unless I feel like dropping the 10 USD on it at Walmart. I barely even play JO as it is.

"I wonder... what might happen if I were to open this door. This simple, wood paneled door. What would happen? Would I find a closet? A bathroom? A kitchenette? MotS doesn't come with the jewelcase version of JK(the only way you can find it now). Nice work on those animations, however they are somewhat obsolete what with Enter the Matrix out right now.

Yeah, other games out right now make it kind of obsolete, but still, if I didn't do this, it would be harder to make mods for JA in the future, which I plan on making a mod for.
