Longer legs, shaplyer torso, more humanlike, longer tail, shorter neck, more dog-like physics. Get some shoulderplades going. Think iguana dog.

Like I mentioned earlier, take a look at Draco from Dragonheart. VERY nicely done dragon, maybe not an exact reference for Smaug the Golden, but should give you an idea what to shoot for.

Reworking the body. I removed the legs, and realized the upper torso had to be larger to support wings.

You may want to double-check the text on this, but IIRC Smaug HIMSELF gave off some sort of reddish light.

Actually it would HAVE to be literal because otherwise there would have been no other light to illuminate the chamber: Gold doesn't glow on its own, y'know.

That's not the point. Smaug had so much gold, he could afford gold that glows.

There weren't. IIRC Tolkien described the chamber as dark except for a reddish light given off by the dragon. Also remember that after Smaug is slain by Bard when Thorin and Company are trapped in his lair there was no light whatsoever (Bilbo found the Arkenstone by chance in the dark) until they were able to light torches of their own.
