We've all heard the song by The Eagles. I just turned the song into a level (not completely done, but mostly). Anyway, I'd say it's a pretty descent level (much better than my others). I'll be posting some screenies soon. BTW, I am working on locker rooms for the pool area and I need a good locker .mat. If anyone has any that they'd be willing to share, I'd really appreciate it.

Alright! I wanted to do this, but I suck at level editors. So, what are you going for? A gothic horror setting like the story at Fiction Press? (http://www.fictionpress.com/read.php?storyid=481329) Or more of a country style setting with something slightly off, like in the quote in my sig?

-I could describe mine better for you.

------------------
"I'm Thomas. Thomas Johnson. I'll be there if you leave the microwave open. I'll be there if you touch the third rail. I'll be there if you turn on the gas before you light the match, or lose a round of Russian roulette. I am at the end of every road. I await you past the last heartbeat. I am the Grim Reaper. I will be the death of you."
-Thomas Johnson, the Black Angel of Death

"I wonder... what might happen if I were to open this door. This simple, wood paneled door. What would happen? Would I find a closet? A bathroom? A kitchenette? Or would I be treated to a nightmarish vision of a universe beyond ours, a universe of meaningless powers and frightful entities with a need to express their sadistic urges? Or a bedroom?"

I'm actually going to make it look like a regular hotel for those who like to RPG. Then, I have an area that goes outside of the hotel into a mall type area for those people who like to play with guns (there's a gun shop). And also, I've included a blocked off floor to the hotel that die-hard Eagles fans will want to see...

Which areas are you talking about? The hotel or the other one? The other one has dynamic lighting, but the screen shot doesn't really show it, and the hotel I used lighting by sector to try to minimize the ping. Just keep in mind that these are only screenies from one room and not the entire hotel [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Standard Lighting has little-to-no effect on ping and very little effect on framerate (in the JK engine).

Be it as it may, but I'm keeping the little guy in mind. The guy who doesn't have a good video card and wants to have fun. I'd do the dynamic lighting on the hotel, but if the standard lighting has any effect at all on the reduction of ping, then I'm gonna use it.

It's about a state of mind (of some kind).

It's Pink Champagne.
And I was just running throught he song in my head while looking at the screens.

Make sure to have a lot of rooms. "Pleanty o' room at the Hotel California".

Put a big desert around it, Neon lights in front, and a long, dark highway past it. "On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair, one smell of coletus rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light. My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim; I had to stop for the night."

Make sure the hallways are long and darker than the rooms. "Then she lit up a candle, and she showed me the way. There were voices down the corridor..."

Put a really quiet loop of someone repeating the choruses all over the hotel area. "There were voices down the corridor... And still those voices are calling from far away. Wake you up in the middle of the night, just to hear them say..."

Make it labyrinthine (sp?). "I had to find the passage back to the place I was before..."

-Just a few tips.

Oh for the love of God..... put proper lighting in it. Why would you even bother creating a map if you weren't planning on making it look realistic?

I'm sorry, but no matter how hard you try to make something look real, you cannot. You may put a lot of detail into it, and it still won't look real. It will look realistic, in the sense that it has a real-like look to it. That's why people say "OMG, is that JO?" when they see realistic JK maps made and think it looks good enough to be JO instead of saying "OMG, is that real life?".

Besides, the more detail that is put into a map, the more the ping increases. High ping kills fun.

Framerate != Ping

And how would adding lighting hurt the little guy? JK's multiplayer levels have proper lighting...
2003-06-03, 7:14 AM #22
Yes, JK's single player levels do have lighting, but if you look at the MP levels, the quality of lighting isn't as good and that's because when you play SP, you play by yourself, when you play online, you're connecting to someone elses game. It would go slower if you connect to an online game especially if LEC used good lighting in their MP levels.

Standard lighting has NO effect on framerate or ping on anything even close to a modern PC. And I'm talking like a Pentium II 300 here. Even on a system as crappy as that it won't matter. You'll find hardly anyone who has such a crappy PC anymore, even here at Massassi where JK is the name of the game.

The only way lighting, of any kind, could have an affect on ping, is if your PC was so horrible that it couldn't handle the visuals of the level that processing power had to be taken from the network operations and be put to the graphics processing. This is also highly unlikely since JK uses D3D, and D3D is very GPU dependant, and wouldn't draw much from the CPU to get the framerate higher.

But anyways, the point is is that standard lighting won't affect your framerate or ping at all. Dynamic lighting can affect your framerate a little, but it sucks anyways. No flicker COGs only help on smaller surfaces. Once you start making surfaces, it starts to suck again. That, and you can only have like 16 of them.

Fine, When (and if) Massassi ever gets their file system back up, I'll post 2 versions of the level. One with dynamic lighting and the other with standard lighting. That way people can have a choice.

Of course it does, but it looks and feels much more real than anything else. It's the first game where you can really look at a character and think of that character as a real person, or like a character from a movie, instead of some polygons on your screen. The environments create a much more believable atmosphere that just hasn't been done before.

In the first verse, the word "Colitas" (not "Coletus", surprise surprise) pops up. In spanish, this means at least two things. First of all, it's one way of saying small rears, so maybe it's just a general reference to... never mind.
It also can be taken as a referecne to portion of the hemp plant, more potent than the leaves. This is the official meaning of the word, according to the Eagles themselves.
