Ooooh...it's so big!

Something I've been working on for a bit. It looks kind of ugly now, but that's just because just the terrain is finished. The idea is two bases facing each other on either side of this huge canyon. I'm thinking CTF, but more interesting. I'll put guard towers in certain places, with sniper rifles in there. Maybe even some traps. We'll see.

Poll: Should I fill the canyon with water, or fog? And should this be a daytime or nighttime level?

a bounce pad to launch idiots to their doom (you make it over to the other side but obviously lose most or maybe even all your health when you land) make sure to make a big sign next to each bounce pad that says "do not use"

I'd say day, with fog. Though I do agree that a wider bridge would be better; or perhaps another one or two small bridges...

yeah, fog is always cool... how about water half way up, and the other half fog... yeah... sunset, almost dark... bouce pads that make you go almost all the way to the other side, but you just barely can't make it, so people might try it a few times, and then later find out they lost quite a few lives trying to get over it.

Bounce pad traps are dumb. Do fog at dusk with some water, but little islands in the canyon that make for good fighting. That level would be cool in JK :-)

Fog. I have at least 7 of these sitting on my hard drive, unfinished. Make sure to add more than the single bridge, maybe make the middle bridge covered to protect from attack and add side bridges that are uncovered.

Do you know what the layout of the bases will look like yet? Have gaurd towers, an armory, a protecting wall, maybe a hangar with ships (eyecandy), and a central control building with the flag. If you are going to have water, make it high enough so that people can swim over in darkness and ambush the base, or maybe add an extension to the base that goes underground. That way, you can have underwater caverns that spies can swim to.

Can you make a main light source and have it move across the sky? That'd be cool to fight in dawn, then noon, then dusk, then night. Oh, add searchlights on the gaurd towers, to look for enemy soldiers.

Sorry if that's alot of ideas, I like these kinds of maps.

Umm, yeah.

[edit:No, I'm changing my vote to water. Disregard the fog above.]

Fog = framerate pig.

Though fog would be cool, you wouldn't be able to look at it, lest your operating system is an Alienware or something like that. I vote water, with an underwater cavern that has the Merr-sonn rocket launcher or some other big gun, powerup or the like.

My idea.

Alienware isn't an OS! :P

If you were going to do fog through the entire level, you COULD do a foghull, which would end up saving you polys in the long run....

Thanks for all the comments. I'm going with water, but I think I'll need a new shader. None of the JO water suits my tastes. I shizzied up the main bridge some, and added side bridges. The side bridges are actually tracks for mining cars. I might even include little cars that go back and forth, if you guys like the idea. I'm going to add some tunnels in the cliffs, and some underwater tubes.

I have a great idea. If it were to be dusk, put a layer of fog on TOP of the water. I'm not sure if it would make much sense in the setting but it sure would look cool.

Oh, and I love the mine car idea. Go for it. Just make sure it stops and rests for a bit on either side before going again so that one or two people would have the chance to hop in maybe? Like maybe have a carved out shaft leading to them.

I like the new bridge.

I also like Hard_Drivers idea.

Make it dusk or nighttime, and get one of those awesome skyboxes with the big ole moons and planets in it. Mmm....

2003-06-11, 10:13 AM #19
Incredible, but look into moving light sources. I still think it would be cool to fight with a realistic day/night cycle, moving a single light across the sky so that it takes about 5 mins for a complete cycle.

------------------
2003-06-11, 10:16 AM #20
Omicron, thats a good idea, but it would probably lag things up...and what would he do about the skybox?

Oh! It could just get so dark that you can't see the skybox...but then it might be too hard to see in general...

And you cant take a light and make it move. Looking good! i suggest you make land mines... yes!

You could have a light move iirc, but only through a script, and even then it'd probably only affect the lightgrid, as the lightmap is static, thus no dynamic auto-adjusting shadows except for on players... that's all despite the fact that you can't run scripts in JO MP (JA MP is a different story, apparently.)

Actually Gonk, you can't run ICARUS scripts, but you can code your own entities, which means you can do whatever you want.

No, when I belonged to the clan WoV, we had a clan map with moving lights. MP, too. I guess I hadn't thought about the skybox changing, but the search lights would let you see.

I dunno, it's his map.

------------------
2003-06-11, 1:03 PM #29
Yeah, that would be really cool! Of course the coding involved in making a moving light might be a pain but, it would be awesome.

Just make it get darker and darker, so dark that the skybox is no longer visible. This would give a nice illusion of sunrise/set.
Searchlights would solve the vision problem as well as create nifty atmosphere.

The skybox is static. It won't move. It won't even darken and lighten. It's f00bar. I don't know how to make a spotlight. I'm not sure it's possible. Sorry.

I really hate sounding like a n3rd, but your bridge is architecturally unstable. It's pretty though, and fog just over the water would be sweet.

Awesome. I like the cart idea, can you make it go different speeds in different areas? If you can, make it curve around and go up and down, and change speeds inside the mountain... if you can't make it change speeds, it doesn't matter I guess.

Yay! People like my idea of the minecarts holding people and fog over the water...I feel so accepted now [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]. Yes, that would be great Emon because you could uncrouch and try to get a few potshots at people up above. But you'd have to watch out that you don't get killed by those little arches over the track while standing up.
