Lens flares can be nice if used correctly, and it was certainly used correctly here. Very nice.

ah, I started with a sphere, applied a texture to it, then used the "Spereize" filter so the texture actually went around the sphere rather than just on top of it. To make the atmosphere, I just added an outer/inner glow to the layer

Pretty simple really.

heres another one I'm working on, I tried to give it a slightly more 3d effect and some clouds in the atmosphere.

If you could just make a blank starfield like the one in the first picture, then you could re-jingle it into a skybox, which I'm sure would look amazing.

Btw, I'm now using the first picture as my desktop BG.

I'm guessing Difference clouds with black and blue, a spattering of white speckles with white outer glow, and then a translucent layer of more difference clouds...

The starfield was easy too I actually Had a layer of clouds with a fill opacity of about 50% and a layer of difference clouds.

For the stars, I used Noise, Then another layer of noise. But for the 2nd layer, I played around with the brightness/contrast to make just a few stand out, and so i got a few big ones, Then I duplicated that layer and gave it a gaussian blur (It makes the stars stand out more and have their own glow). Then duplicated the large stars layer again and gave it a large gaussian blur and tinted it blue. There were way to many large stars so I got the eraser and removed some of them (In the one above, i tried to leave most of the large stars on the blue patches)



Feel free to use them. (That goes for everyone )

I'll make some 512x512 and 1024x1024 ones when i get home from school, Then i'll try to get them to fit togeather as a skybox
