"It's better when I just kick people and don't talk 'cause I kinda sound like I have a cold."

I'm nearly done skinning Darth_Kitty's most excellent likeness of this doofy character.

I had to do some extensive remodeling so that I could skin it properly. But that's done now. Given the challenge of properly skinning buttons onto the coat, and the relative simplicity of Neo's outfit, I believe I'll model low-poly buttons down the front of his coat. Then I'll give the model back to Darth_Kitty, who will finish the head (I guess) and relay it to the very helpful Graves. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Thanks to all involved, including Cazor, who put a lot of effort into making sure I had the model. *cough*

OKAY! everyone calm down... he isnt doing anything to the face anyways. the only reason he had to remodel some of the body was so he could skin it.

Awesome job Thrawn (and Darth_Kitty)! This will make a nice addition to Cazor and co.'s mod [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Are you using photoshop for the coat texture? or is that Darth Kitty's work, kinda unclear about who's skinning/modeling what part?

A few things, first of all the hair is great so far, but I think a little bit more detail needs to be put into the face, it has a very cartoonish appearance at the moment and that will only get worse in-game. Another very minor detail, and really doesnt need to be changed, but for the sake of accuracy, Neo does not wear boots in reloaded, theyre just plain slacks that go down to dress shoes, kind of a big change from the first one (if youd ask me, Id prefer the airwalks over what he has now anyday)

Finally despite what cazor says (and yes I know its his mod and he can do whatever the
**** he wants to do [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]), the buttons do go down to the near bottom of his coat. (here's a semi-good reference pic that I was using of the actual prop: >>worth a look<<)

Keep up the excellent work [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
Cheers,

Thank you for all the help, Salv. To answer your questions, Darth_Kitty made the head texture, although I darkened the face a bit. I'm using Photoshop for the coat texture. I also had to do some extensive remodeling of the coat to make it skinnable. Putting detail into the face, I'm afraid, is not my job. I've never been that good with skin anyway. About the boots, I never noticed that, although I'm sure he does wear shoes. I think I'll leave it as-is now and call it "artistic liberty." [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] I know the buttons go all the way down the front, but I can't skin them at the moment due to the texture stretching, and I'm going to end up modeling the buttons anyway. Thanks again for taking the time to write that up! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Doesn't look like Neo. Sure, there's the black clothing and sunglasses, but he has a very recognizable face, and that doesn't look like him at all.

Which also happens to be what Keanu Reeves looks like.

Everyone has distinctive facial features, if you are actually looking. Keanu is not excluded from this. The model/skin do not look particularly like Keanu, instead, they appear to be a simple white caucasian male with black hair wearing black clothing and sunglasses.
2003-08-17, 12:28 PM #25
I think the model will look more like Neo when Thrawn has actually finished texturing the head. Give the guy a chance would you, and do him the justice of waiting until the model and skin are completely finished before comparing it with Keanu Reeves. THat white on the head makes it too hard to discern between the two at the moment.

Thrawn isnt doing anything to the face... This is Darth_Kitty's model and he is just reworking it to make the skin work for the coat/body. The face looks like this:

This is the problem with doing a popular character skin...everybody is so hung up on the exact likeness that they fail to notice the artwork put into it. Come on guys, nobody here is getting paid for this sh*t, if you want an exact replica of keanu do it yourself and quit yer b*tch*n, its not like we/they are just spending 10 mins on it and saying "well it looks enough like him for me".
(and if youll notice, the neo from the animatrix doesnt look like keanu...the neo from enter the matrix doesnt look like keanu...and these are licensed works, people got paid to do that and it looks like turtle crap compared to what Ive seen this community put out)

And i swear to god if somebody posts another picture of keanu reeves's face thinking that the skin creators havn't seen it a billion times im gonna go ape sh*t...christ, how long until you people grow up and learn appreciation?

Considering I'm looking at a poster of Neo on the wall in front of me I think it looks very close to his actual look.

And I wouldnt say it doesnt exactly look like him Emon. That picture of Keanu Reeves doesnt even look like Neo in the second one.

I'd say the model needs a little more of a green tint to it but thats just because in the Matrix everything has a little green to it. I'd say the model needs a little re-work on the face but I'm not going to because its a game model not a freaking replica of Neo from Reloaded.

And if you're going to attempt to make a replica of something, you had better plan on doing a good job. Since this *is* a replica, no one has any right to complain that people are criticizing it for not looking like Neo. It's *supposed* to be Neo, hence the problem with it *not* looking like Neo.

He looks even stupider with long hair.

In any case, while Keanu may not have the most interesting/complex face around, it makes sense to copy his features as closely as possible (of course no low-poly model is going to look EXACTLY like him). This model makes a good start and I don't know that it's worth changing the body at all, but the head just needs a good tweak-session. I've made digital copies of people, and they're some of the most difficult things to do. They take a lot of a effort and reference pics, but they can be the most satisfying (getting "Whoa, that dude looks like Keanu!" comments is very nice when you work your *** off).

The Bottom Line: With some minor fine tuning (and a little more detail on the face's skin) this could look **** close to Keanu. If you're not going to go all the way with the model, you might as well just change his outfit and use him as an original character.

NOTE: None of this was meant to be offensive in any way. Just stating my thoughts.

You seem to be missing the point of constructive criticism entirely. I am right, of course - it bares a resemblance to Keanu Reeves, but the face really doesn't all that much. Once you decide to make something based off real life, you automatically hold it up to the highest standard - realism. I would think that someone who makes models/skins would always want to learn and get better, instead of hearing mindless praise.

Also, the "don't criticize it unless you can do it yourself" is one of the oldest, and stupidest, arguments I've ever seen. I am able to watch a movie and decide whether it is good or not without knowing how to make one.

And if you think it's "just not possible", then check this out: http://www.turner3d.com/smith.htm
