Due to the reaction to my first (admittedly crappy) piece, I figured I'd actually make an effort to produce something interesting. Half an hour later, I came up with this.

All I used was the Airbrush tool and brushes of varying sizes (one pixel diameter and hardness of 100 for the outline). For the shading, I took the largest hard brush Photoshop has as a default, set the opacity to 5 and just painted with my tablet on a blank layer. After that I just blurred some parts of the outline and shading to give it a smoother look.

again... not that I could do much better, but the fact that you just drew half of it and then reflected it makes the face look odd... try just drawing the whole thing

It's faster to mirror it, though when I do full out paintings (no outlines, like with self portaits or scenery) I just paint everything.
