Mmmmm... Imperial-ey!
2003-09-09, 2:35 PM #1
[http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] Some more. Very early. Needs much work. And, unlike most Imperial bases, this one has BATHROOMS!!

(I would have the rolly-eyes smilie here, but I'm pressed for images (I have seven, the max allowed).)

Dang JPG compression makes it downright impossible to see things, but... guess at it. (again, the tongue-ey smilie goes here, but I'm pressed for images.)

Ja... watch out for the guy in the cannon!

Close up of officer in the control tower you might have seen earlier... first shot, to the right. You have to mind-control this guy to open the big fat doors that let traffic through this part of town... layout will be told at end of post... For now, enjoy refreshing coke.

Cannon fire! I really like the lighting in this shot. (Cool smilie goes here.)

There were stormies sitting there. Really. Due to some nice scriptwork of mine (and whoever it was that supplied the anger script, I forgot), they actually sit and do... stuff. Chat. Read (see the book?). Whatnot. Then they see you. [ominous music] They stand up, ask who you are, wait a sec, go for the nearest ammo rack, and proceed to fire. Or, they will, when I get the script path to work! Grar. kay, 'nuff talk. Onward! (Smilie face original goes here.)

Yeah. Other side of room.

Control room, after I cleared it out. It's accessible from the walkway outside there.

In fact, everything is accessible from the walkway. Because, this little thing here is an outpost. It supervises an imperial road leading to the main base on this planet. It will run right in front of this outpost here. The main base will have several roads branching off from it, leading to various landing pads scattered about, so in case the Rebels or anyone bomb the base, the road will be demolished, and the Rebs will celebrate, thinking they have destroyed the entire thing on the whole planet. But NO, there are more landing pads they can re-build from! OMG! So, back to the old outpost, the only way to access it is by going around it, behind it is an entrance, so it can't be stormed by foot. THe entrance is behind the big door that you'll have to open by mind-controlling the officer. Fun fun?

Questions, comments, proposals (please no, I'm 13! (eek face goes here.)), death threats?

Those yavin veins don't fit the level. They just don't. And for that "stormie sit, stormie talk"-room, it looks to.. small. Make the ceiling put in higher, else the fights will become boring. (Walk while deflecting, if they aren't dead, slash, they are.) The rock walls look too repetitive, and not "rocky" enough. Lighting doesn't look that good, though you like it.. It's a bit too dark for me. Also - what skin is that?? And in my opinion, it needs more detail. Most detail put in are models; don't worry to put in soem more brushes.

Ok, I know that sounded harsh, but I think criticism is okay. At least I didn't flame you but told you exactly my thoughts. Though i must say; this is a decent first-time map, and you deserve it, after your GTK struggle.

Oh, your typo isn't the best ever. Cazor's is.

I'll remove the vines, they were giving me too much trouble anyways. The ceiling is low because the room is supposed to be low-class, not exactly built for comfort. It was more built more for just sitting down and stretching your spine from standing about all day. Having a jedi come and kill everyone was not in mind when this uotpost was built. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] This is only one room, 3 stormies. There are gonna be and already are tons more places to fight. A small tower rooftop comes to mind... with a small bit of wind pushing you. Dunno if I'll have reborn in this, though, I'll most likely get custom models and make 'em REAL jedi. The kyle model (I'm assuming that's what you are talking about) is in no way related to the level. It is the default Kyle skin I d/led to replace the boring ol' normal Kyle skin. I already have a model, but I can't seem to get it to work. I'll try to add as much detail as possible, but I need to save some room for the other 75% of the level. Cleared up enough? Any questions I missed? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I try to work with the script path thing to get it work. Also, did you add anything to the script that makes the stormies walk to the ammorack? Because now when I tested it properly, My stormie doesn't stand up, he stands after he get's to the ammorack. I'ts looks funny when he moves in sitting mode...

Wow... SOTD... First time I've ever gotten it, after ebing here about 3 years... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif]

And for the last time, of course it's dark! It's nighttime!![/b] There is pleny of light to navigate, EXCEPT for the caves, which are supposed to be that way! Caves are generally dark, and this is in no way an exception. You're supposed to use the IR goggles to get through the caves, but you won't need them any other time! There will be enough light in the ventilation system (if you choose to go stealthy [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] ) to navigate.

Well, thanks for the comments, people! Last night I added the street, which is easily wide enough for two AT-STs, and tall enough for maybe two AT-STs to stand on top of each other in, in the tunneled out part of the streets. I'm gonna have big bright lights all around the street to satisfy you peoples' need of light ( [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] ), and have two watchtowers with the spotlights before the street, so they aren't so pointless.

Er... what's the eek face for? It does make sense to give an imp base ventilation, doesn't it? Especially the bathroom... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I would have update shots here, but there is a strange little error in my map right now. I'll fix it soon, I promise. Ya see, I've had it before, and it fixed itself after a while. I dunno how, but... it worked.

HOWEVER, why not ask here? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] It's just a small leak outside my level, with no source. It begins in the void and ends in the void. Last time, it turned out to be a target_speaker that somehow got moved into the void and dissapeared, so there was no apparent source... until it appeared 3 days later, and I moved it out of the void. So... any ideas on how to find the missing entity? Let's go on a treasure hunt, kids! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

[EDIT: Forgot to add, it doesn't compile if there is a leak. It crashes the compile program, even though I have 'end compilation upn discovering leak' unchecked... but it crashes, saying it can't find my map's .prt file. I've lived with it so far, and it's good, it makes sure there are no leaks in my map. If there aren't... it works. If there are... it crashes.]

Agreed. Very heartily. All you do is make a box, make it small enough to fit the player crouching, get a good texture (which I don't have [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] ), and add a soft vent noise. TA-DA! A vent! You can use this idea, but be sure to give me credit for coming up with it in the readme. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Updates as soon as I fix this here error. I'll show you the road I added, and you will get your wish, Edward, THE BATHROOM! It was really annoying making toilets entirely out of patches. They don't have a good texture, like Raven would really include a toilet texture with JO. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

More!

Notice anything different? The spotlight is on top of that tower, there is another tower, and you otice... things in the background, right in front of the base.

Ah-HA! That's what those "things" are. Streetlights! This is the imperial road. Each one of those steps is 5 brushes, a little detail thing I picked up from Mad*Dad's levels. Meaning, I used the idea, I didn't copy the brushes directly from his levels.

Better view of the street, from one of the watchtowers. Yes, I am aware those lights need to be brighter. I've doubled thier intensity.

Thar be the stormies! Sitting! They aren't reacting to me because I have notarget turned on.

That's where the vines used to be. It leads to...

THE BATHROOM! Happy Edward? That hallway back yonder also leads to the elevator that takes you down to the entrance to this outpost, but it doesn't work yet, and there's nothing but a box with... a vent. And an elevator.

Sinks. The HOM there is supposed to be a mirror, but I've fixed it now.

Break through one of the stall walls, and there is a vent that goes to the elevator shaft. I hate making elevators in JO.

That be all for now. More later. Yup.

[EDIT: Forgot to mention, each toilet, sink, and streetlight is authentically made with patches. Big pain in the neck.]

Looking promising, Zell.. It looks as if you improved lighting, too. Now for the things that don't look good: That first screenie: UGH!! Really, Those rock walls are nearly JK quality - Though some JK walls look even better!! You seriously need to improve on that. The streetlights look wrong somehow, too.. And that road texture; is it a final texture? It doesn't quite resemble a road... I like the bathroom, it has a lot of nice little things.. It's just.. Those sinks look wrong. As if your patch meshes are sticking through a brush. And since when are there walls in front of vent shafts?!?! That's totally unrealistic; it wouldn't work then..

In case you didn't notice in the post above, my English teacher is NOT my best friend...
2003-09-13, 8:55 AM #30
Wtf is wrong with the rock walls?? I think they look great in-game. They look like real rock walls. You need to see them in-game before you pass judgement on them. The road texture is not final. The sink looks bad because they are 4 bevels in a cylindrical hole made by subtracting a 16-sided brush. That's really the best I can do. I'll get rid of the wall in front of the vent.

2003-09-13, 9:08 AM #32
Those walls look like a flat brush with a repetitive rock texture. And for those sinks; WTF?!?! Why not use a patch for that?? It's easy!! It's called an end_cap patch. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

------------------
In case you didn't notice in the post above, my English teacher is NOT my best friend...
2003-09-13, 9:27 AM #33
Um... I can't tell if you're joking.
If you are: Haha!

If you aren't: I just told you, they aren't flat walls with a repetitive texture. They are very uneven, bumpy rock walls with a slightly repetative texture, though you can't see if it's repetative in-game easily. And the sinks ARE patches. They are 4 bevels because it works that way. End caps don't give a dome effect, they just get... screwed up. I've already tried end caps, trust me. They don't work for domes. Also, the streetlights may be a tad too thick, but I won't make 'em thinner if more than 5 more people think they look just fine.

The rock walls don't look real at all. Part of the problem might be that the top is cut straight across. Try making that so it's not so level, it'll look better.

[Hrm, well as for the sinks, why use 4 bevels when you can just use a cone and mess with the vertices for the same effect?
