Duel Zero - Saber Models (56k Friendly)
2003-10-03, 6:18 PM #1
That's right, I finally have something to post screens of.

These models were made by Acharjay, who continues to pump out kickass saber models for me over the years.

I did the coloring myself, so if anyone has any suggestions about the colors, I can handle it.

Okay, since I can't get the detailed pics' links to work, I'll post a comparison pic of SBX sabers: Link

Did, you have like pretty much the same saber models a while back? I remember testing this mod, you had practicly the same models now as you did before. Anyway, looks nice

Well, I failed to mention something.

It would be more apparent if that image was bigger or if the links were working, but these sabers are two-toned, and once you go ingame it looks fantastic. Of course, I didn't take big enough pics, and the links aren't working.

I guess you just have to look close, or if all else fails, use Windows Magnifier. Oh well, I'm proud anyway.

I think the glow should be a little bigger, it looks too skinny.

The only hesitation I have with increasing the size of the glow is that it emphasises the ugliness of JK's translucency, and the fact that I've used solid color. Other than that, I'd agree.

Here are some close-ups (colors not final):

I've also made some new laser models. Nothing that hasn't been done before, though. I'll get some screens shortly.

Okay, since i dont know much about Jk editing, im gonna guess that you cant have a varying translucency on a saber, you have to make it in stages? But if you could, try and take one texture and make it gradually fade to translucency then make that show up on either side of the saber with a white core. I think this looks nice for Jk, but its too SBX-like.

Here's a pic of what im thinking:

Somehow try make it so there isnt a white then bright green, then a less bright green, then normal green. try and make it like one color, but have it fade from the inside.

I don't know much about editing sabers, but perhaps you could try to make a fading glow like explained in the advenced lighting tutorial

make a mat with 2 pixel black (transparent) and the color you want and stretch it... but I don't know how you make sabers, are they 3dos, or sprites?... I don't think I have been a big help [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I'm pretty sure 3dos can't be translucent, although Cazor's idea is one I have thought would be good.

Well good. I was kinda thinking that the saber is just a stick that projects a 2d texture that looks like its 3D because it always faces whoever is looking at it. So if you can get the 'one texture fading to translucent on each side' thing going... it could be much better than SBX. It could be like JA's sabers almost.

That's what Glowsaber 2 (I think) did, it didn't work too well because the blades looked weird from certain angles, and the alpha-blending made other transparencies (such as water) go funny.

You can't have translucent non-solid color textures on 3dos, unfortunately.

Oh and.. I WANT A TEAL SABER!

if not any thing esle atleast a blacklight colored saber (though I guess that would really be dark purple)

hm? I made such lighting effect things with that what I described on 3dos. Perhaps I misunderstood something, I am quite drunken right now... but I know that you can use that stretch ut thing on 3dos...

I personally think the only color you should add is White. There were white sabers in the books, Coran's self-built saber was white, if I remember correctly.

We've tried that, and countless variations of that. What we've decided to do is have two colors - a bright "core" color (eg: yellow or a half-white version of the glow color), and then a glow color (eg: green). This is kinda old school, taking after the original sabers in JK.

The glow color has two layers, one is opaque, and the other is translucent. We've made the saber as opaque as possible for a few reasons:

• JK's engine rarely ever actually renders other 3DOs when they're viewed through the translucency.
• The particular translucency that JK uses makes things look really dark, unless it's a bright colour.
• Levels with tints can really make the saber look crap if it's fully translucent except for the core - a green saber in a red tint would become gray.
• When you have an opaque color, you're almost always assured that it won't change dramatically depending on the background or level tint.

And I believe DeTRiTiC answered the 2D stretch glow idea.

While they do look good, I wouldn't use yellow with the red or green lightsabers, personally.

Thanks Acharjay.

You see, Acharjay is always better at explaining these things than I am...

So? Everyone has a personal preference. I'm not gonna use any color other than purple, because it looks cool. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

We'll see about adding in some of those colors. They're easy as anything to recolor - the only thing is that Check wants to keep filesize down.

I'm sure you could do something coggy to change the mats based on what model of saber they chose.
