So, you have enough time to upload the image to the EC, come into the showcase forum and make a new topic, but you don't have enough time to put the image url in a couple of [img] tags?

But I guess judging by the amount of numbers used as letters in your name, we can't really expect much intelligence from you.

That saber looks like it wouldn't be very comfortable to grip for long periods of time. And what is the modeling program?

Thanx for helping me with the post Vincent. the real reason that i didn't post the pic last night is becausse i was having trouble getting the url to work (it has been a pretty long time since i last posted any work).

As to the saber's asthetics, YES the white dots are part of the texture, and THANK GOD NO they will not be staying. the prog that i use is Gmax. as i've only been using it, i'm still getting used to it, but i'm learning fast, and already have a redesign in the works. I should be able to post an in-editor pic tonight (and this time, i will actually post it myself) of the new design, but don't expect to see it in game for a few weeks, because i first have to get JA, and then install the saber (my copy of JO was stolen, so that rules out that option)

well, here it is as promissed: the redesigned lightsaber. It now is a little more user-friendly (if it were real, it would "hopefully" fit comfortable in your hand). Keep in mind though, it is still a wip, and has no skin yet (you'll have to settle for material textures for now):

Pretty darned nice (tho if you ever meet an Australian Star Wars fan by the name of Robert Brown don't say your topic name out loud in his presence).

As for the feel of the grip, I don't see much wrong with it. It's not much different than the average OT lightsaber (although most have some sort of fins or ribbed ring structure on the grip).

And hurrah for the Original Trilogy belt loop!!! No hideous red activation button!!!

speaking of the belt loop...keep in mind it will be static, dunno if im alone in thinking this but ill mention that it may look funny sticking straight out all the time :-/, id have to see it in game i guess

[EDIT- The remodeled one looks 400% better, and less like the mace windu spark plug [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] good job...but still the ring (see above)]

Yes. This one looks much much better than the first. Looks like you can hold it for long periods of time. And I like the design better. I'd recommend going the mushroom "clip-on" style à la prequels just for the point that the ring would stay static and might look bizarre. Although during the heat of a saber fight, I'm not sure one is going to type out "omg! teh ring doesnt move!!11"

Thoughts and ideas but it still looks good either way. Keep it up.

Thanx for the better reception of the re-design. i'm personlly not quite sure why the clip-ring on the end would be static (especially as i recall a mara jade lightsaber from JO that was an almost perfict recreation of Mara's saber from the front cover of MOTS and it had a saber ring).

Then again, i am relatively new to modeling, and the saber models are the first things that i have an intention of releasing to the community that i have shown (and are in fact my first models). if i get the chance today, i may throw up a new pic with textures (i may yet add to the saber itself) but it will take me some time to learn uv-mapping in Gmax. regardless, there will diffinately be some new material by sunday. as for the sahder, i may need some help with that as while i can skin, i have no clue how to impliment a shader.

well, i decided to run an experiment: increase the poly-count of the saber to get more detail, and see what happens. 15 minutes and many torus suptractions later, here's the saber that will never appear in JA (if it laggs gmax up this baddly, i dread to think how much the game will creak and groan with this thing) keep in mind though, the spikes are also found on the latest update of the lower-poly saber. still, you never know: with some optomization, this one may appear ingame yet.

I see no reason to edit sabers. They're one of the rarely noticed aspects of the game, simply throwing on a few dials and junk is good enough for me. Honestly, spending that many polys just on the saber alone is rediculous.

There is a poly limit to sabers for JA I believe. At least there was one for JO.

I like, although the back of the grip looks a bit too prequelish for my tastes (I'm sorry, I just don't care much for either saber design OR fighting method in the prequels).

And dude, NEVER, NEVER NEVER mention that dammed MotS Mara Jade lightsaber in my presence! Ever since By the Emperor's Hand came out people forget that Mara uses LUKE'S OLD SABER!

Personally, i wasn't really going for a prequilish design. thehand'e just happened to turn out that way (like i said, it's not staying, as it has a poly-count that would be far to high even with optimization).

Also, the "now-umentionable" saber wasn't the only one i saw in JO's glory days (it had glory days?) that had a belt-ring. there were a few others that also worked, so unless anybody can really give me a detailed reason why it won't work, it's staying (@ least until i test it in-game)

Hrm, well the grip looks just like Qui-Gon's. and then theres always the anakin/vader/luke-like angled peice at the emitter. Personally i wouldnt download a saber mod for JA. i would fo JO though since it let you have 1st person lightsaber so you could accually SEE any detail whatsoever. but i kinda hate JO... *cries and goes to take his medicine*

Sadly, i regret to inform you all that the project has been put on hold. I have decided to wait until i actually have the game before completing the model (if all goes well, i should be able to get this saber finished off by the end of the month).

When that time comes, i'll post a new thread. until then, i won't be adding any more pics.

Not to hijack the thread of course...

Does anyone have a cutaway pic of a lightsaber that shows how much space the inner workings of a lightsaber actually take up?

I'd like to see that.

The model looks really good, but I was wondering, how do you get the skin to appear on the model in game? I'm trying to learn how to model with Gmax, and so far I can only get a grey lightsaber model to appear in the game. I also cannot get the blade to appear attached to the hilt. How do you do this?

I guess it's not exactly a rule (or is it?), but notice how the post right before yours was Oct 8, and yours was the 18. Generally threads that are that old don't get posted on anymore. We call this a thread revival. Welcome [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif].
