Well, here it is: i've taken the suguestions dropped on the last forum (well some of them, but then again the map's not quite finished yet, is it?), and produced what is now the second beta of duel_arcane. the new design follows the same sort of shape as the original, but is now more complex (and my graphics card hates me for it). Keep in mind, this was built last night, so there are few external walls and no skybox.

Evil man has caulkspots in last shot.

Looks nice, but the texturing isn't great. Very repetitive (Floor in first shot, ie), and the pillars in the 1st shot seem stratched out.

I like those curved stairs though.

As stated, this is a quick build that i pieced together last night, so of course the texturing isn't spectacular. i just sifted through the rift and evil3 texture packs and found what looks @ least half-decent. AND NO, THEY ARE NOT CHALKSPOTS! It's what JA does to me whenever there's z-fighting. i guess it's better than showwing 2 conflicting textures in the same spot, but it still must be corrected. i'll fix it in the next build.

As for shot 3, i'm not sure how it's farmiliar. It seemed like the best way to proceed in constructing the way from the upper part of the arena to the lower part.

Looks good, but essentially it's just a bunch of boxes joined together with decorative architecture put inside.

Try and think of maps as not being a bunch of rooms but rather one huge area where you are merely temporarily prevented from seeing certain areas from other areas.

Take a look at Canyon Oasis for JK1, most of the base Quake 3 maps are a good example too.

It looks like a light problem to me, I know z3r0 personally... in his other beta he was having annoying light problems in Radiant.

Not to mention he DID say this beta was just slapped together in one night. It looks good considering the time it took him to build it.

Expanding on what DeT said, remember that one of the goals in any 3D, or even 2D design is to make sure the user can't figure out what you started with. Right now it's pretty obvious you started with some boxes, you shouldn't be able to figure out exactly where it came from.

And you need some logical light sources, too. Maybe some crystal things like the SP level.

All of your suguestions are great, and i'll do what i can to take them into account for the next build. sadly it will be a little while before you see the next version. within a couple of days i should have a new map built (especially now that i've gotten tired of playing the Halo demo)

As forGothicX's contued suguestions on spicing up the textures, i would... except for 2 problems: i cannot find any other new texture sets that would really work (though i will keep looking and if worst comes to worst make them myself), and the fact that i really don't know how i would do it. any tips would verry much apreciated.

Just keep using the //rift/ set, but try to make them look less repetitive. This can be done by i.e. adding and extra brush with a different texture to break it up a little.

Keep in mind, the following thigs will be changed:
  • The fog HAS to go: it's killing the atmosphere. if i can, i'll add a blue fog that's a little more transparent.
  • The holes in the center of the floor on both levels will eventually be filled by a custom-made effect (anyone know a good tutorial i could use for that?)
  • The spiral staircase has not yet been added, so none of the local die-hard matrix fans need to panic yet....


can anyone think of anything else i can add to the map? (there's lot's more to come, but a few additions to the list wouldn't hurt)

I will say this.....

I would critique your map IF I could see any of it!!!

Just playing.. It does look very nice for architecture... but as for textures, I can't see any... so when your next pics are up i'll tell you what I think about them.


And one more thing...

ADD THE STAIRCASE!! O_O
