I was perusing Best Buy when I suddenly stumbled upon a copy of ubisoft's 'Beyond Good and Evil'. For those of you who might not be familiar with the game, it's an adventure-esque game (a genre that I seem to be all too fond of these days) in which you play the part of a reporter. The story at this point is irrelevant to the purpose of the thread: This could possibly be done in JK.

You'd need the code to resize BMPs and convert them into 16 bit mat format, which you could devise on your own if you happen to be UGG_BOOT or have friends in the Code Alliance or some similar Illuminati circle of JK-oriented coders.

Then, and this draws from an idea that was posted on this forum way back when, but using playeraction (so I guess it would have to be MotS) to 'catch' the F12 screenshot key, you could read the created BMP with a launcher program that would also serve as the BMP->mat converting utility. The mat would then be named as some predefined name and number (using arrays for scalability).

Then, you could open up an in-game menu with a hotkey, and scroll through the pictures with playeraction. The player would have to clear his MotS directory of screenshots before loading the mod for this to work.

Additionally, you could check whether the player has LOS on some important item he's supposed to take a picture to verify whether the picture is of the assigned target or whatever.

Granted, all of this is probably too much work for a fading engine, but wouldn't it be wickedly cool?

I agree it's a very clever idea, but really, is anyone up to doing this? Let's be honest; would anybody actually undertake this huge project? And the fact that it would have to be for MOTS... ouch.

Impractical? Yes.

Are there better graphics engines out there? Sure.

Are there powerful enough engines out there that I can customize more completely? Not a chance.

This idea in of itself is impractical, but mods for MotS haven't gone the way of the dodo just yet.

The number one problem, is that the external program in no way can speak with JK, since JK doesn't reckognize changes made to code and mats until after it's restarted. I honestly can't think of any other way you could screen capture, and it still function within game.

[edit]Oh, and it was Pokemon SNAP, S-N-A-P. Possibly one of my favorite games ever, I just wished it would have had more levels. The combination of scripted events and being able to slow these events, and change your interaction with the world was AMAZING. A more adult, or mature themed game should come out using this gameplay style.[/edit]

jEDIkIRBY: Heard of the game Fatal Frame and it's sequel, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly? Check it out; it's just like Pokemon Snap, except with zombies. More mature, indeed.

You never do, now go crawl back into your box now before the sun hurts your eyes. ;]

Kirby: The program would not have to communicate with MotS, it could check the MotS directory for new bitmaps, and then convert those.

Yes, but once converted, MotS couldn't go GET those files. They'd just be sitting in your mots dirrectory, doing nothing.

Actually kirb, I found that JK reloads the HUD files after you unpause a game with ESC. It might reload some other files as well...

I found this by accident while working on a mod. I was fooling around with the HUD, and I had made a major change to it... I then saw that I forgot to close JK from the last test I had done. I maximized it and resumed the ga,e, and lo and behold muy new hud was there!

Quite interesting.
