Mommy, there's something in my closet...
2004-01-01, 6:42 AM #1
Just some eye canding from the REALLY early plans of my next level, "Mommy, there's something in my closet...".

- The introduction of the level
"A child's imagination is a powerful
tool of fiction. But what happens when
what the child imagines becomes
reality?"

- Plot of the level
Basically, this reverts back to a childhood experience that many people have had in common, and that is thinking that there is something in their closet that will attack them once their parent figure has left. Well, for this child, it really happens, and it doesn't even wait for the parent figure, in this case the mother, to leave. In the movie of the introduction, it is heard that a child awakens screaming for his mother. The mother enters the child's room, nurtures her offspring and tries to explain to him that everything is okay and that there's nothing in the closet. She opens the closet door to prove it to him, and she is brutally attacked and begins to scream. All of this is heard and never seen. However, the actually level starts off as you, the father, coming into the room in worry and seeing the aftermath of the attack. There is no one left in the room, but there is blood everywhere. Frustrated and scared you begin to look for something to explain what you see. You notice the closet door open and look inside. You can see a hole in the back of the closet that obviously wasn't there before and you decide to go through it and doing so, you enter a place that clearly is not of this world. It's a dark place that's damp and horrific sounds can be heard from in the distance all around you. The place you're in is made up of many pipes and sewage like facilities, but no machines or knobs like a sewer system would have. You continue on your way in search of your wife and child, but inside you, something says that they are already dead.
-That's all I'm revealing for now.

Here are some shots of what I've done so far (only a half hour's work including getting the textures.)

-The area in the child's room that's infront of the closet.

-The backyard that can be seen through the child's window.

A great Micheal Crichton book in which the characters go into an alien sphere on a derelict underwater spacecraft and come out with the ability to create in real life anything they think or dream. There's a movie of it, too.

Nice screenshots for a half hour's work! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The screenshots look good, but for some reason, I'm getting a lot of HOM on the window and doors when I'm not near them. Also, there's a bed with blood stains on it, but isn't showing up in game, so, I still have some work to do.

I could hook you up with an ak 47 and a few other guns that I happen to have lying around on my hard drive. Doesn't look I'm ever going to finish the TC they belong in...

You're right, the guns from JK would look cheesy. But, this is a family man, he has no guns. The only things you'll be taking with you into this other place is a crowbar and a flashlight.

Crowbar and a flashlight, eh? Sounds familiar.

I like the execution thus far. Good use of Massassi-grown textures, but where did you get that door texture? I like it.

Actually, the door's a 3DO. There's a couple different textures in it. But I'll probably just use a texture since the door's giving me trouble right now.

Well, it's like everything that's in the level so far that has more than basic shape (more than 2 sides) or is a 3DO causes HOM when the player isn't near it. Even after I modified the door to make it have 4 sides instead of the more that it had, it still caused HOM. The blood-covered bed was originally a 3DO, then I decided to make it part of the architecture of the level since it kept HOMing. And then, even the architecture bed was HOMing when the player was far from it and near it. It may just be my computer, so I'll try re-doing everything on my other computer. In JED it all looks great.
