great start. clean up the jagged lighting, though. also, be sure to change the mipmap distances in jed (f6).

I wouldn't release it by itself. I'd package it with other JK Arena levels so that people can cycle through the levels and won't get bored with it too quickly.

made the earth look more realistic, added the moon, and worked on the lighting a bit more.

The Earth and the Moon look a bit squished. Other than that it's great.

If your going to use the moon and earth as textures, put them a lot further in back so the perspective won't change so dramatically when you move around the level (ie oval moon). A good star mat would help too.

Other then that the visuals are great. Is there more to the arena then this? Do the holes lead to another level?

I was thinking of making them sprites, just hadn't gotten around to it. The holes lead to a circular hallway around the main arena area. The big hole in the middle is a trap..
Should I make some other stuff or should I keep it small?

Keep it small but feel free to add platforms and such, maybe some sector thrust or something. Fun stuff.

Big Arenas don't work so well.

Oh yeah, and make sure you pick up the new version of the cogs.

Making a 3do always face you defeats the purpose of it being 3d. Like you mentioned, use a sprite or make a sphere 3do with an earth map wraped around it and there ya go.
That way, you could even add dynamic lighting to it to get a real hemi-sphere light effect onto the planet.
