My best suggestion would be get ahold of Bryce if possible, or if not, Terragen (freeware). Import your heightmap, and get a render from directly above. Take this, and make it into your texture. (It shouldn't be just one texture... 16 would probably provide good detail...) as for mapping it... go ahead and use ForceRemap, but first cut your 3do into seperate layers for each of the seperate textures. In the case of Terragen as a renderer, I'd suggest two renderings, one with sand, and another with a rocky texture, and do the transitioning in an image editor. As for style, my best suggestion on where to look would be UT Assault map "Overlord", which is based on the same thing, but of course had professional texture editors, and the advantages of the engine in a level of this type.
