First attempt at JA editing...
2004-01-18, 5:08 PM #1
I've been wanting to start learning how to edit JA/JO for a while, but I just can't get myself to sit down and start. I just don't want to learn how to edit all over again! I forced myself to sit down at the computer and explore with Radiant, and it really is as different as you can get from JK. It does show a lot of promise, so I can't wait to get used to it and to keep on making levels.

I sat myself down, looked at some tutorials, and came up with these two levels (more like two rooms).

Is it good for a first-timer? Any comments from the Radiant pros would be helpful.

Very nice for a newbie!

Yeah, it's about the opposite of Jk editing. Thingk of it as actually building something, like with legos, instead of carving a level out and deleting areas like sectors. What really made me understand it was the legos idea. Great start.

[edit]Also, for taking nice screenshots, make sure you used devmap [mapname] to start the level so cheats are on and type the following in the console without the ' ' : 'cg_draw2d 0' (do the same command, but with a 1 at the end if you want the HUD to be back) 'cg_drawgun 0' (1 if you want the gun back) and 'noclip' so you can fly around the level and not have to take screens while jumping, like it looks like you did in the last two. Just some tips for better looking screenshots[/edit]

Looks like we have a new Wedge on our hands. Very impressive patchwork for a first-timer.

The patchwork is really nice. What you need to concentrate on, really, is designing more than set pieces in boxes. If you ask me, patches are more of an accent than the main focus, unless your architectural theme happens to be very...curvalicious? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Regardless, that's not bad at all.

Gonk you should check out Star Trek: Elite Force part 1, they have an alien ship level that I swear has no straight lines in it!

The first thing I thought when I saw the title of this thread was "Uh-oh, another n00b is going about posting his first attept. This is going to look like crap"

In fact it is the exact opposite. Great work, keep it up.

That level is the very definition of patchwork design. It was really cool.

4 words (and a customary smiley):

"Whelly does it again [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif] !!!"

Seriously, you never fail to amaze me with what you come up with Whelly [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] - I mean if it isn't JK, then its JA [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]. Those are some seriously good-looking curves going on there [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] - I know it's a simple concept of illusion, but I really like the window and the sky in the first pic, as well as the open top roof (gave me a brief flashback of MOH:AA where you're creeping through the sniper town...).

The only real constructive criticism I have to offer is that the darker shade of blue (in the top-archway with the steps) is perhaps a little too strong - I know that its supposed to have a blue tint, but the contrast change seems a little too harsh. I hope you don't take this the wrong way - what you've got so far is very promising for someone who's never attempted JA editing before. I got initmidated by just how many sub-windows there were in Radiant (options-wise), not too mention I couldn't get my head round the brush editing concept, after having only ever done JED's sector editing [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

Keep up the fantastic work and if you should ever need a beta-tester, you know where to find me... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

PS: I'm still building that level that I mentioned to you ages ago - I guess one time soon, I'll call it a day, but not just yet [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I have played Tal Erulani (or however its spelled)... Its a nice aesthetic map, but it's not the greatest for an actual GAME. The layout is just too constricted for FFA, and it doesn't flow well at ALL. Wedge did a fantastic job with the contruction, however, didn't see a sparklie anywhere. Thanks for all of the nice comments everybody. I got positive comments from Gonk and gothicX, Radiant Gods in my opinion. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

lucky_jackpot: My friend, you had better finish that level! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] If you need any help, please e-mail me.

Here's another shot of the fountain room, with a view of the dome. I had no idea that shader did that until I saw it ingame. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif] BTW, is the only way to see a shader's property is in text?

If you download the JA MP SDK, ShaderEd2 is included, though I prefer Notepad myself.

Also, nice new shot, but I'd do something about the boxyness of the room itself.

Its too boxy. Rather than keep adding detail to the walls, see what you can do with the walls themselves... give them more angles and curves. Rooms dont necessarily have to have 4 walls.
