Ok, so I made a model of a djemebe (african hand drum) modeled after my own djemebe. I spent quite some time on it (mostly in texturing, which I happen to suck at), and then took pictures, and put them on a disk to share with you all when I got to school and could upload the pics. I also recorded a 30 second sample of me playing my djemebe to show off (the quality is not all that good, because the only mic I have is from a headset, and not a very good one at that). However, now my disk is for some reason not working (it says it needs to be formatted, which is strange since I used it at home, and both my computer and all the computers at school use Windows XP Pro), so I am unable at this time to showcase my work. However, I posted here anyway, in order that I might waste all of your time by forcing you to read this. Ok, actually, I will be updating this post with the pics once I get home from school, so you should all be waiting in barely controlled anticipation.

And the audio clip:

Special thanks to Ubuu for hosting the files for me.

Ok, and my question is as follows. Djembe's like mine have a rope that winds around the drum in an intricate pattern holding the head on.
See this image for an example
Anyway, I need to do something like that with my model, but I'm not sure what the best way to go about that would be... Any suggestions?

Yay, updated!

ANd btw, the textures are all photo-raped (in a manner of speaking, I actually held my drum up to the scanner, but anyway), though I did have to do some editing to them to make them work... Also, the actual djembe I linked to as an example is NOT mine... I found the pic online... I would love to show you a real pic of mine, but I don't have a digital camera.

Perhaps you could include the ropes in the textures?

Yeah, I would just use 2 sided objects and shape them out in the pattern, maybe try to do it so you can just copy and past them in... if that doesn't make any sense I'd love to give it a shot and show ya what I'm talking about.

I'll send you the file, Z@N if you want... I'd love to see what you could do with it...

And I've been playing since I was 16, (I'm 19 now) so just over 3 years, though my main focus has been on a drumset, rather then hand drums.

If you're going to do that, I'd suggest just adding it to the texture.

But if I just add it to the texture, then the ropes won't have any shape to them... And you'll notice that they are not stuck along the wood the whole time... They are out from the wood, and then come in.

3 years, sweet [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Something you may or may not know, handrums and drumset dont go together very well, it seems the more you focus one one the other suffers, its pretty hard to keep a balance but it is possible. If youre looking for some good hand drum music, listen to some Ravi Shankar or Zakir Hussain, both are incredible tabla players, good inspiration. Well, keep playing man, there are no limits [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

[EDIT: forgot to ask, are you taking lessons?]

I have a djembe as well. I love its sound. I started hand drumming before I moved to set. It really helps in fills and such to have a background in hand drumming, because in hand drumming you need to be dynamic rythmically to make your sound interesting.

Excellent point, Heeb.

And Salvy, thanks for the suggestions... As for lessons, I took lessons on set for about the first year... Since then I've just been playing on my own. But yeah, I have noticed, it can be difficult to be able to play both proficiently. Overall, I think I definately focus more on the set, and the djemebe is just something else to do for fun. I can also play guitar (accoustic and electric bass) though I'm not all that good at it. The funny thing is, I can't use most other percussions instruments worth beans... Shakers and rattles, etc... are just not my thing I guess... I think it mostly has to do with the fact that the motions are different (ie, you're making part of the rhythm with the top of your stroke, rather than it all being downstrokes).
