If you've played URU, then you'll know what this is. If not, then just say bravo...

Ha nice. I'm surprised someone actually plays Uru here. It's not that popular, unfortunately.

Here's my absolute first attempt at that door. Did it from memory only...

Never played Uru. Only got Myst 3, lol. (Uru, ages beyond Myst, right?) Anyways, I've seen that style of door before though, actually. It's usually used in high-tech looking environments. Cool though. Some better textures, and working it into a level would do some for it though, I think.

Oh, and the sounds are the original, but because of the copyright limits, the sounds in the movie are not what I'll be using in the game... I'll try to sample something else.

Indeed, I am now an Uru Live addict as well. Good to see that other Massassians have fallen to this as well.

As for the door, quite impressive, obviously the textures need work, but the motion and timing of the locks is spot on!

Does Uru have a monthly fee, and is it multiplayer only?

Uru WILL have a monthly fee, but right now its currently in the Prologue phase, so its free. Basically this is an open beta, anyone can register and play for free (so long as you own the game) but there is not an amazing amount of additional content, they are simply using this period to break in the servers, and fix any bugs in the code. They are also throwing the player a few bones here and there. Supposedly, once the setup is stable, then they will start Chapter 1, start the story, and start charging a monthly free (you get 1 free month when you purchase the game as well), According to sources in Cyan, they are looking for $10-$15 per month fee.

As for the Multiplayer only, no, there is what is called the Prime game. It is a full (if somewhat short) single player game that helps to tie in everything about Myst, Riven, and D'ni. In my opinion, the single player game alone was worth it, and while it is not nearly as good as Riven, or even Myst, it is certainly an improvement over Exile. Plus, the graphics are rather impressive and it really does help tie in the games with the written materials (the books).

Something I wonder in Gahreesen... What's the purpose for those suits in the fortress? The chubby and skinny?

HA...

*Spoilers below*

*Seriously, there are going to be Spoilers*

*I guess if you really want spoilers you can keep going, but don’t say i didn’t warn you*

No offence, but obviously you are not a Live player. Those suits, and the central Wall of Gahreesen are part of a Maintainer training course. The suits are the standard Maintainer safety suits they use when linking to new ages to approve them for safety. Trainees dawn one of the suit (via that large device at the far end of the room), and then in the command chamber (the large chamber attached to the rooms where the suits are, someone uses the control panel (only appears in Live) to set up a Maze on the. The trainee then goes into the wall chamber wearing the suit, and has to scale the wall and navigate the maze, the catch is that the Walls in the maze are invisible, and if you touch one, you are knocked off the wall, and half to start over, so it really tests your logic and memory. Finally, when the maintainers used it, they could change the environmental settings it the wall chamber, they could make it insanely hot or cold, or smokey, or fill it with poisonous gas, to further test the endurance of the trainee (that functionality is NOT currently enabled in Live). How do we know all of this? Well the DRC finally caved into explorer requests, and TURNED THE WALL ON! That’s right, in live you can actually wear those suits, and climb the wall, and set the maze for other people to climb.

As for the two types of suits, the large bulky suit is the old model of maintainer suit, and is kept I guess to give the trainees perspective, and maybe in some circumstances even used for training. The smaller suits are the current Maintainer suits used when a maintainer first links to a new age to ensure it is safe, and then to approve it for common use.

Wow, I am a geek for knowing all of that...

OK, read the spoiler, and sounds like fun. I thought they would be used for underwater exploration and that contraption at the end of the hall was like an elevator down to the water. Hm... Maybe I shall make a JK skin of that...

Some shots from the level I'm making around these doors.

I did make another one, and I was going for an almost exact replica of the Gahreesen fortress, but then the new doors came about, and they had different dimentions. The old doors (URUDoorStyle1) were 2x3, and the new ones were 3x4. So the old level was deleted... Silly me, I could of cept the archi... So much work down the drain...

I'll say this once... kill those textures. Avoid JK textures if at all possible, really...

Do you have any you can make for me? Or any that you have on your site? Cause Massassi's MATs aren't downloadable!
