So no I have to go to Massassi to see
all of the DT IV screenies?
Still looking good... For what, the third year running?
I've done editing in both DF and JK, and have released a marginally-decent level for DF.
In comparing DF and JK, there are only two things that are in favor of JK, even if they're somewhat major:
The reduction of distance HOMing (from the ~80m limit in DF to the ~12000m limit in JK), and
The capacity of .cog files.
The adjoin HOMing is actually something that JK could use improvement on, considering that since JK is fully 3D, its limit of 128 portals to DF's 48 is more harmful.
Both games can be "stretched":
Some of my work with JK is comparable in appearance to UT (the first one, of course, not 2k3). However, most of the time I try this, I get severe HOMing, my framerate drops from ~70fps to <1fps, and sometimes it crashes.
Much of the better work for DF (such as DT IV here), is massively beyond what people at Lucasarts envisioned DF being able to do. Since DF uses 3DOs almost identical to those of JK, most of the full-3D effects can be simulated (such as slopes and reflective floors), and players typically don't notice things that it can't simulate (such as
continuous tripple adjoins to the same wall, which would be split into multiple surfaces in JK).
When it comes down to it, DF seems to have a much greater capactiy for highly complex levels. Sectors don't have to be convex, and often are doughnut-shaped, or use only one for a collumn-filled hall. INF and VUEs can handle most of the things people expect out of COGs, and perform really cool effects (such as the erruption of Mt. Kurek, the ship in Star's End, and the space battle in Condition Red). Although they may be nice, 16-bit textures have NEVER been neccessary. In fact, I see no reason to use them in my JK level.
Also, because there are less things to distract one in making DF levels, and thus out of only around 300 levels, there are about a whole dozen that are good enough to blow away even the most hardened of modern 3D fans.
Also, as a final strike, DF has
Mines, the levvel than cannot be bested!
...Of course, there's also
Operation Cakewalk: Kyle Likes Cake!...
