I guess he wanted to be able to crunch numbers regardless of day or night? If so, doesn't taping it to the desk eliminate the ability to transport the handheld calculator around, thus making night-time use unnecessary becuase you could just switch on the lights? Or maybe Cavey does secret calculations in the dead of night that he doesn't want anyone to know about. OR! he knows something we don't and is aware of Finnish plans for world domination, so the calculator is his way of preparing for itnernational repercussions so he can still calculate things once the Finnish power grid (and Finland itself) no longer exist.

As for the dent, I believe he's referring to how the keyboard bends. Some keyboards do that, becoming wider on the left.
