A few of you may remember the Bryce render I showed off awhile back. The idea at the time was to make a desktop out of it and release it at Massassi in three different colors. After working on it endlessly for 2 weeks and seemingly getting no where, I lost interest and dropped the project. I think what may have happened is I got too concerned about how it looked and continuously second guessed myself. Thus, I could never judge if something looked good or bad. That, and many of the things I was trying to do in Photoshop were overly time consuming and involved techniques I honestly sucked it. So like I said, the project dropped. I may eventually pick it up again. Who knows.

But that is not why I posted this. Early in December I re-did one of the prototypes renders for Isotope, the project that was dropped. Not having the time to render a full resolution image at that point in time due to school work, it sat until mid January. Since then, I've slowly been working towards something like what Isotope was going to be. The pace picked up in the last 2 weeks, and finally I'm calling it done. It's mainly done for two reasons. One, I can't think of much more to do to it, or any more ways to improve upon elements I already have. And two, I'm beginning to get some of the same feelings I started getting with Isotope.

So, while I think it at least reaches among the top 10 best things I've ever made, I find it far from perfect or everything I'd like it to be. But that is how all artists view their work. I'll let you guys but the judge.

BEWARE: The image is a 1.13 meg file. Modem people may be waiting awhile.

Metamorphosis

I've played with the Hue and Saturation a LOT recently. Metamorphosis looks good in virtually ANY color. Thus, I'm prepared to make it any color you guys want and upload it. The resolution as of right now is 1280x960. For people with higher resolutions, you'll have to center the image and use black or white as your desktop color. Sorry guys, I couldn't see myself working on an image that's larger than my viewable resolution.

And for those who are still reading this and care, I'll run down the "specs" of the image.

Programs used:
Adobe Photoshop 7
Corel Bryce 5

Number of layers:
Approx. over 80 (I just did a rough count)

.PSD file size:
13.3 meg

Fonts used:
BitDust2
LargeNine
Small Fonts (got me, I think it was included with Windows)
TR-909
Lucida Console

Ok, I'm done. Comments? Questions? Flames? Requests for other colors? Offers to ride Kirby's wheelchair?

You can have a ride if you show me a teal render.

I really like it. Reminds me of Hideo's usual work on his videogames, with all the useless, yet interesting data he fills it with. I think some background text would be nice, as if there's other things going on in the background. I also don't know about the thing on the lower left, all those boxes have a sort of contrast with the rest of the image that I can't decide if it looks good, or bad. So I guess that's a good thing, that it confuses me :-P

*bump*

Common guys, I know it takes work to click on a link and wait for an image to load, but it's a free desktop and I'm offering it in any color you want.

Surely that somewhat makes up for it.

I often see people attempt trendy BGs, but they are usually lacking in at least one element. I don't mean any of this in a bad way, just some constructive criticism.

First off, the triangle in the center caught my eye. It caught my eye in a bad way. It detracts from the flow of the image, and kind of keeps your eye in one spot. This is fine, but you have so much going on throughout the image that I think it might be better without it. The next thing I noticed was that the stuff in the bottom left corner seems very redundant and out of place. Right after that, my eyes went to the right side of the image. Those histograms work fine, but the huge vertical bar ruins the flow once again. Your image is kind of flowering from that retical you drew on the primitive. Those vertical lines run perpendicular right through the outward flow, kind of causing a trainwreck. Also, the border made out of punctuation seems out of place.

I know I just said alot, but really all this needs is a few tweaks to help flow. I know you may be thinking "but it's a BG, it doesn't need flow", but if people are going to be staring at this all day, they want something that's as visually pleasing as possible.

I hope any of that helps at all. I really enjoy it when people can make sense of something I've said [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]. I was wondering, also, if I could get a link to the original render and have permission to do a remix of your background. I'd give full credit, of course.

[edit] I found your comment about not working on images larger than your resolution discouraging. I consistantly, whenever possible, do all my work at twice the resolution I intend the final product to be. If I'm doing a BG for 1280*1024 (smallest I'll do a BG, they can shrink it), I'll do the whole thing at 2560*2048. Either that, or I'll set the DPI to 300.

lmao...

Awhile back (geeze, might have been early last year, dunno, I loose all track of time here) Cazor posted a picture on the Discussion Forum wanting us to give him facial hair. I did that, but wasn't content to do JUST that. So I played around, made two creepy ones, and uploaded all three and posted them.

Now you know. I guess this means I should clean out my FTP eh?

You should take requests for different colors. I'd love to see orange, myself [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] Or even a vibrant dark green [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Anyway, that is sweet, but the triangle does take away from it.

Sorry for the double post, but I think this breaks it up better.

Echoman: Blue is on the way. I have it done, it just needs to be uploaded.

MBeggar: I'm not sure if I said it or not, but there really is ALOT on there that seemed right when I did it, and then after staring at it for awhile, I wasn't to sure anymore. When I find myself begin to do that, it gets harder for me to judge what should stay and go. That's why I just kinda shoved a finishing touch on it and posted it. Right now, it's kind of in a grey state between "finished" and "unfinished" I may pick it up again and decide to work on it, I may not. Only time will tell.

Compos Mentis: I'm not offended in any way. This is the first attempt I've released. The last one fell into a black hole and was never finished. I KNOW it's lacking in several areas and I'm open to suggestions as to what tweaks could be made to help improve it. To address your resolution comment... I don't work above my resolution when doing desktops for this reason, When I do a desktop, I find it easier to do it at my resolution so that I can view the whole thing at 100% at any time so I have a good idea of what it looks like. Any higher and it comes down to my viewing it at 50% or something. For me, its hard to get a good idea like that of a final image. I don't know, probably something of a poor excuse. I'd be happy to let you "remix" it, but I'd be more comfortable emailing it to you or sending it over a messenger serivce. I don't just want to put it up on my FTP for everyone to see. Give me a shout out at my email (IanSechler@netscape.net) or MSN (IanPhoenix9286@yahoo.com) any time. Those are the two most likely places you can reach me.

I thank the rest of you for your comments. This post might have started not making sense after the half-way mark, it's getting late, I got little sleep last night, and I've been holding other discussions which have distracted me. My apologies.

Maybe, problem is I don't have Illustrator on this computer. I could have done them in Freehand, but that would have involved a tad more tedium that I cared to endure the day I put those in. I'm not the best dealing with Freehand.

Nice to know you like it. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I'll say it now so I don't get flamed.

MOST of what's on my site is mine, but there are a few things that are taken from DeviantArt and I uploaded them so I could use them at school. At first glance, the only one I can name right off is XS_URANIUM. I think there might be at least two more, but I don't see them right off.

If there's any question, just ask.
