I'm still seeing stuff in a box. Get rid of the boxyness, and you'll have a sweet looking atmosphere.

Reminds me of the "Tokara Forrest" map from Unreal Tournament 2003.... but with crystals and inside a cave.

Keep cranking out screenies! (but keep r-speeds in mind for those of us not fortunate enough to have super-computers, eh?)

Love the detail. But yeah, needs atmosphere.

It has a good look to it, but I agree with the boxiness comments.

i'll be adding some variation to the visible wall, what i'm going for is that only part of the cave wall is visible, the rest is darkness...as to the boxyness, are you talking about the planks of the backwall? or those large verticle rocks the bridges are connected to?
2004-02-15, 12:39 PM #12
Maybe you could try giving it a rugged canyon look. This is a bridge, right? It seems to spanning a bottomless pit, so you could just extend the sides(y axis) really far out and have it fade into darkness. Then just cut up the cliff faces a bit to make it look more natural.

Or if you want it to be more closed in and cavelike, perhaps you could add some stalactites drooping down from the ceiling.

Just ideas. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Now that i can see it better (it's night-time in canada, so there's no glare), i would conclude that it looks like Tokara Forrest fused with one of the minecar ride levels from Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

eh? im not sure if that was an insult or wot? lol

Three of us posted at the same time!

By the way, I meant the backwall. Also, about those vertical rocks, they don't look very natural. I know you're using shadows to hide a lot of the architecture, but I still think they need some rocky outcrops or ledges. Maybe you could try making them concave (if you know what I mean). Maybe you're going for the barren look, but some vines or roots shooting out of the backdrop and those vertical rocks could give a great feel. I'm sorry if these suggestions are impossible with the game, I'm not very familiar with JA (JO?). Good luck!

thanx , i'll try doing somthing to them, one thing though i cant get any sounds to play in the level, like the sound of a waterfall or cave drops....it just dont wanna work...normal ingame sound fx work tho, but just not the ones i add. This seems really wierd in game as theres a large waterfall just the the right of the bridges, not the little one below them...

It looks like something out of Prince of Persia... and that's a good thing!

Looks good!

Concerning the sounds, if this was Jedi Knight I'd probably know what was going on, but being a Quake III variant I don't have a clue. What type of audio files are you using and how big are they?

[Edit: You might try posting on the Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy Editing Forum if you haven't already.]

It's a complement, as doing the kinds of things with brushes that are done with static meshes is damn-near impossible. Personally, i like the darker screenshot better. the increased bightness makes me want to run into that cave and get a tan.... and that's just not right!

On the static mesh concept, maybe you should ask someone to do models for cave walls. that way, it wouldn't looks like... well... a box anymore.

I agree, the second shot is way to bright. Maybe you were just using it to show us what the cave really looked like. Anyway, keep the lighting of the first, it's perfect.

Actually you can get away with "the box" look. You can make this look like some sort of ancient architecture. An underground temple, entrance to city, whatnot. Vines, cracks, holes in the walls. It all ready has an ancient feel to it.

i'll admit to the prince of persia inspiration...that bit with the mystic fountain..the only reason i'm doing the blacked out cave thing is to keep rendering to a minimum so it'll run on most machines..and yeah that picture was made brighter for some people to see it better [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
i'll be adding more detail to the cave wall later 2day, and maybe re-doing the wooden platforms below the bridges.

more pix soon
