Yet another feeble attempt at mapping

That's right folks! i'm still at it!

Sadly, the map from the last thread now exists only in a small pk3 on a few disks. i can send it to whoever wants it, but as the Blaster worm forced me reformat, i have lost the capability to complete it further.

But no sense dwelling on the past. i'm leaving the underground temples and moving towards the future!

And so, i present my teched-out hallway:
[http://12.220.246.6/cooker/shot0003.jpg]

I'd show more than the hallway, but at the time of the screenshot, the hallway is all that exists.

More as it (and my own filespace) comes folks!

That looks pretty good. One thing to keep in mind though, is that the best levels have vertical elements. Stuff like ramps and pits and such will help make your level look a lot better.

Walls = Good
Ceiling = Bad
Floor = Horrible

The ceiling could use something extra, maybe like something running down the middle.

The floor is just horrid, with no deviation, and one NASTY texture. Grates like that don't look good at all unless something is under them. The floor would probably look great if you could see under it at something else.

I think the walls are pretty bad as well. The textures don't blend together, really.

Next compile is a few days off (next pic should be posted by wednesday), so you'll be able to look @ those screenies then (the next build is much bigger).

The map (thus far) is the interior of a base. the map itself will not be an arena, so while there will be no bottomless-pitts-of-doom, there will be ramps, hills, etc.

I've already added a sort of "sub-trim" section to try and fix the floor problem (there probably won't be a see-through grate as i have to keep r-speeds, and the health of my rediculously underpowwered computer, in mind. As for the ceiling, i've been thinking of maybe adding some pipes.

Everyone's a critic. Hate to break it to you gothicX, but the walls stay. I'm not going into another thread war with you (or anyone for that matter). Still, you are entitled to your oppinion.

As for my opinion...

The walls look nice. The hallway itself, though... I reccomend shrinking it a little bit, or having the walls "take up" some more of the floor. Huge monolithic floors simply shouldn't be used, as they detract from the realism. I would reccomend using a texture that appears to have the floor be "pannelled".

as for the ceiling, I would put some pipes there, and perhaps a series of lights. The lights on the walls don't seem like they'd be enough to light up the hallway; I'd add some flouescent-type lamps hanging from the ceiling.

I agree with something from most of the comments already posted.

It is FAR from a feeble attempt. The cieling and floor COULD use work, and the walls are amazing.

Keep up the good work, you could be on a roll to completing this one.

I think it looks great,

I have only the problem with the floor..

Needs a new tex.

and if you want to spice it up I'll suggest..

umm I'm not sure how to explain it right but,

slightly raise the floor, then near the wall with enough space for a player stand in have the floor to where it is now, kind of like giving the floor a spine

Put something on the floor. Thats all i have to say. Other than that looks prett good.

A rule of thumb for detail (well, at least it's MY rule of thumb): If it's a detail that's fairly large (but not a seam), you shouldn't use a texture for it; just make it part of the acitecture. If it's a grating, it should have transparency (simple transparency, where the holes are see-through), and you should put something behind it.

Well, folks, i promissed the goods before wednesday, and i delivered. I've upgraded the hallway, with the "sub-trim", some pipes and extra lighting panels (that don't actually emit any light)

[http://www3.sympatico.ca/pvntex/shot0005.jpg]
As you can see, the pipes and extra light were simply tests, and so run along that small stretch.

[http://www3.sympatico.ca/pvntex/shot0006.jpg]

The hallway was extended, but sadly that's about it.

On another sad note, i've decided to stop working on this map for JA. due to issues with my computer, its just not feasible to do the map i want with a Q3 variant engine. As a result of this, my plan to wait until Unreal Tournament 2004 is available (to me) and then build the map out of static meshes (which i will custom-construct to match what i was building here). Once Republic Commando is available (once again, to me), i will port the map over to that game.

I may attempt to create one last duel map, but this sadly means that until i get a faster system, i'm retiring from brush-based mapping. (I will, however, still stick around the site [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif])

Much better, but get rid of the grate texture.
