I was inspired by one of the levels in the levelsource contest, and so I decided to try my hand at recreating something. Can anyone guess the game?

This was all in half a days work. There are still a few bugs with the fog and textures, but those should be easily worked out. Comments or suggestions?

Yeah, that's "Myst" alright. I love that game, but can never get far in it. I suppose it's either to tuff, or I'm just retarded.

I'm having a bit of a problem. This patch here REFUSES to be affected by the fog. Can anyone tell me why, or better yet, how to fix it?

EDIT: New shots in my first post. I've changed what was originally there, so no sense in keeping them.

What's a foghull?

And I fixed it. I deleted the patch, and just changed the structure of the rock. It's not as tall, but it works now.

I gave him some music from the first Myst and Riven which seem to fit the atmosphere well.

Foghulls are a way of making sure the game doesn't draw unneccessary geometry which is hidden behind the opaque distance of the fog. In JO/JA, just set "distancecull" in worldspawn to be >= the opaque distance in the fog shader.

Your level has a very simple elegance to it. It's very easy on the eyes. I never got to the Stone Age in Myst, but I imagine there are a lot of eerie sounds such as wind. I'd imagine it's something like the places near the shore in Return to Zork.

Say, it would be incredibly cool if you had those ropes sway in the wind. Making them func_pendulums and toying with the angles key, you could get them to swing back and forth very slowly. That would look incredibly cool. Maybe even have the sailed masts do a little yaw swaying...but that would be tough if any ropes are connecting to them, in which case I'd suggest making it sway veeery slowly so you don't notice the rope doesn't move with it.

Yes, that too, Echoman. I'd suggest a rather high amount of tessellation. I keep seeing low tessellation values in maps that would have been good years ago, but PCs can do a lot more now. It really makes it look a whole lot cooler. Make sure you do the same with water, although you'll want it to wave only a little.

Yes it will. Try compatibility options. Right click on the SHORTCUT, go to properties. Go to compatibility tab. Run it under Win98 or Win95. That should do it for you. Although I haven't even had to do that with mine.

I like it so far, but one suggestion:

See in the first shot where there's the curve of platforms going up? Make it into lots and lots of smaller planks that are loosely thrown on. The only example that I can think of right now is the inside top of the buildings in the depot Call of Duty map.

No idea about the fog.

Both the sails and the water move via shaders. I have to give credit to zuljin for the sails, I lifted them from Gonks tatooine docking bay level. I'll remove them if asked, but as they are they fit perfectly. I don't know how to go about making the ropes move, but I'll work on it. Thanks for the comments, I should have a public beta up by the weekend.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone played that "real myst" that came out a while ago? It was like a remake of the original in actual 3d, similar to Myst III. I'm just wondering if it's worth looking into finding.

I bet you accidentally made that patch an entity. Entities aren't affected by fog. Try selecting it and hitting ungroup selection, and all that.
