The filter on the first looks a tad too intense for my likings, but it's by far the better of the two. The second has too many outline shadows, and those are bad, especially around the face. Outline shadows prove that there's an unatural lightsource being shined on the subject, which if you know anything about photogrophy, is a bad thing. Realistic lighting makes the eyes set easier. The first has no general lighting, which is fine.

The only thing they both need is a lighter held to them, because you can't spell crap without rap.

I personally prefer the first. Though I think it could use a bit more contrast. The second one, just looks stark. And the font seems unattractive and isn't interesting. As for your comment Kirby, I don't think the shadows have anything to do with lighting, just a large increase in contrast. A bit too much in that case in my opinion. In terms of that, something between the first and second would be better, I think.
