So can I. I've finally gotten around to doing something I've wanted to do since 1999 (after the release of the original UT).. I've learned UED. To a point. Still learning it, really, but I know enough to have a level in the works.

Obviously, its Onslaught because.. well.. Onslaught is pretty easy to map for, and its the most popular gametype right now, so why not?

The name is ONS-IceRink for obvious reasons. I've still got some work to do.. I need to put in blocking volumes, etc. etc. Note that there are NO raptors on this map at ALL. I didn't like the feel of 'em on the map, so POOF. Gone. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] I'm also debating my link setups. Right now the default is a "web" setup where all you need do to open up the enemy core is capture either the southern or northern node, or both. The middle node (between those two towers on the pond) is linked only to the north/south nodes... I'm thinking that with all the mantas and such this could lead to a quick rape of an unwary team.. I may change the default link setup to actually be the secondary setup I have in there now... Zig-Zag... basically.. red base links to the south node, blue to the north, and then the north/south to the central node... so you HAVE to go through the middle, and it gives the players some time to spawn and such... slows things up juuust a tad.

Oh, and the central node (again, the one on the pond) spawns a tank. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I tried to figure out that editor, but it got the better of me. There's something innately wrong with having to verify each and every brush you lay out.

Great looking so far. I have good good good vibrations.

Well, looks nice & stuff, but I still think that Unreal is the only good game with the name Unreal. Mehboxbam.

TRAITOR!!!!!!

As for the map, it doesn't look too bad (reminds me of a CTF map from 2k3), but that transmission tower just seems out of place some how. Rest of the map looks pretty decent though.

They're all included in UT2k4.. iirc, those are from the "AlleriaLandscape" package.

I remember you from when you started editing JK a while back... I must say your skills have increased 10 fold.

How do you like the UT engine for editing? A lot easier or what? I ask cause I'm moving UT2k4 editing after I finish my JK map

The transition from JK (not JO/JA) to UT2k4 is fairly basic from a CONCEPT standpoint. JK and the Unreal series are based on the same concept of level design. In that you are literally carving rooms out of a giant block of matter, as opposed to Quake 3's concept of starting in nothingness. That said, you'll need to learn how to work with brushes, etc. etc. UED's interface is pretty slick. I've been playing with it for maybe a week and a half, but then again I have an advantage in that I've been screwing around with Radiant for 2 years or so. So some of the ways you get things done are roughly the same.

You'll note this level has a very sparse amount of brushwork... I'm going between this map and a "learning experience" map (that won't ever be released as its just me fiddling with crap) to get more accustomed to using UED for brushwork, etc. etc., and specifically using Static Meshes effectively, so that I can make purty indoor areas. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] UED's terrain tools are RIDICULOUSLY amazing and are literally worlds beyond what we're stuck with for Quake 3. (Though that's largely due to the age of the Q3 engine.)

As for the map... I'm taking suggestions for a name... currently its ONS-IceRink but some people have said that's not the greatest name, and seeing as I'm historically horrible at naming maps... Any ideas?

Edit: More screens:

I've done the collision volumes (clip brushes), added snow, coronas for the torches, some jump pads for people on foot to get up from the iced over pond to the cliffs easily (though they still need tweaking), and I'll begin working on pathing and stuff like that soon enough. Essentially right now its largely playable by PLAYERS but not bots. I also need to get a better radar map image...

Your use of static meshes seems to be improving (how did you do the terain btw? i would have gotten into mapping for 2k3, if not for a serious bug in Ued3.0 and a decisive lack of cash to try and get another copy of the game)?

If its done my June/July (better be, or else we have a serious problem here) i'll test it out (don't laugh: it will actually take me that long to get 2k4)

Terrain is all handled in UED. Very simple to get in and start going, honestly. Compared to what you have to go through with Q3, its a BREEZE, and its fantastic to be able to edit terrain on the fly as you see fit in the editor, allowing you to make adjustments as needed. The terrain tools really are fantastic.

Bots are now actually playing the map, and the botpathing is working quite well. I've got two Redeemers in the map, though I think I'm going to change them to Target Painters, as Redeemer camping is a concern.

ION Painters Gonk, not Target Painters.

But as you seem new to Unreal, I won't hold it against you [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif].

But still, how could you possibly camp using a redeemer? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif] (that is rhetorical. don't answer it for the love of God)

There are Target Painters, and Ion Painters.

The target painter calls in an airstrike while the ion painter causes that pretty purple explosion effect from an orbiting weapons platform.

Thanx for the correction. sorry Gonk [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif], but as previously stated: i won't be getting 2k4 for several months, and so i don't know what new items are in the full version.

Yes there's two painters now. Ion and Target. And I'm not new to UT. I've been playing UT since the days of yore (waaaay back in '99). I own all 3 UT games. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] I actually used to review UT99 maps for a now dead map review site.

Also, now the painters are Ion painters, simply because JT managed to get a ludicrous kill with ONE lucky airstrike from the target painter. Also, someone modded in the lovely jump boots from the original UT, so those are in now too. (All embedded in the map, so no need of extra file downloads.)

I wanted to show this map to a friend at a LAN party last saturday... but he had all ready found and downloaded it before I even mentioned it to him. Your legend travels fast! I really love the snow. More of a moderate to heavy snow than a mere flurry, but the name suits just fine. BTW- Lotsa downloads so far considering it's still in beta. Keep. It. Up.
