I don't have alot of spare time anymore, but occasionally I spend an hour or two and play with some interesting ideas in jed.

I think that it's against the rules, but either way, I say it's compensation.

You forgot to flag a few parts as sky. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] Looks great! How did you get that "flatshaded" look? Did you simply apply a different texture to each surface, or what?

What! slightly negative comments? Just for that I wont bother finishing it. (kidding) This is just a test level for 3dos I'm in the process of modelling. The pic a really early shot of a very detailed zeppelin model I have planned, I was just testing a few things like texturing (8 bit) and framerate on a slow system running in software mode. The idea is to produce the most convincing looking zeppelin possible within the limitations that were present back in 97. By convincing, I'm not so much talking about historical accuracy as a balance between looks and playability.

btw: I keep some of the sky surfaces unflagged so that when I'm flying around the level I can tell how close I am to hitting the ceiling, I suppose they could be wall textures but I don't really care enough at this point. The flatshaded look was achieved using a rendered image of the object as a single texture. (to do that all you need is forceremap and a 3rd party 3d app that can import/export geometry to jed)Eventually I'll use several textures on the surface of the blimp because I don't want the textures to be blurred when the player is walking over them.

Oh, one more thing, you shouldn't rule out possibility of being able to cause this zeppelin to explode. Taking turns defending it or bringing it down could be fun.

How big is that thing?
Edward's Cognative Hazards
2004-04-27, 9:58 AM #14
Bigger than a breadbasket. Technically speaking, because of the weight of the metal framework in rigid airships, the ship's body needs to be quite large in order to have an efficient weight to volume ratio. That's why zeppelins were larger than modern blimps which have no heavy metal (not a reference to music)parts. Anyway, the 3do is less than 100 meters long, I'll have to check the file when I get home. (update, it's actually about 150 meters)

Looks like a cylinder with points at either end, to me.

I like the bridge, though.

Hm, no I haven't been here in awhile MBeggar. I guess it's somewhat reassuring to know some things never change, like the tendency to go off topic on these forums :P.

I'm pretty sure all zeppilins consist of cylinders with points at either end if you exclude the fins, engines, and gondolas :P. Don't worry, this work-in-progress will definitely improve over time.

I only say that because a cylinder with a point at either end isn't much work, let alone in progress. Show us what work you've done on the fins, if you have?

what if he hand carved that baby in Jed kirby? that would be a bit of work, depending on how it was done.

Nah it wasn't really alot of work. I didn't carve the 3do by hand. This was just an experiment that was done in about an hour or two, but I think the pics show the idea has potential. Obviously I need to do alot more work to silence the critics [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif].

Actually, I quite like the idea of a level like this. The Zeppelin itself looks nice. Keep working on it!
