This isn't meant to be offensive in any way. I'm simply posting my current view on terragen renders </disclaimer>
Terragen is a very powerful/free program. It's designed with the capabilities to create truely breathtaking, and very life-
like scenes. This, combined with it's vast amount of plugins, leaves you with a very large amount of possibilities. Then taking into account post-render editing...well yeah.
My problem is that noone takes the time to properly learn the program. They immediately start shooting out the same unrealistic, cartoony terrains with the same default cloud layers and default heigh maps. While this is cool and everything, please don't expect me to ever compliment you on this. It doesn't take more than an hour (being very generous) to set up your basic render. Hell, I could spit 3 out before anyone replies, probably.
Remember what I just said about all the power you have with this program? Use it. Spend the time to experiment with the different plugins out there. Go through the tutorials and learn about the heigh maps, textures, post-render effects that are available to you.

This doesn't apply to massassi quite as much (but there was that terragen spree a while back...ugh), because we're all pretty computer savvy. It's not that difficult for us to poke around software and figure it out. I just felt like ranting.
Render away!!!
