Yep, everyone's welcome to post their latest Terragen renders! We're long overdue for one of these threads. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

One I did.. I finally figured out how to use multiple textures. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Edited brightness/contrast/gamma only, no plugins.

Sure, this is the tutorial I used, which explains how to have multiple textures as well as a myriad of other topics: http://www.claudec.com/lair_of_shaders/tutorials/terragen_lloyd_m/terragen_lloyd_m.shtml

Have peoples skills improved or has the program itself been improved upon? These look a lot more realistic than the renders I remember seeing 3 or 4 years ago. Good work.

I think the skills, I learned a lot since them and most of it has been possible with the old versions, too. I could try to make some things with the old one. Perhaps I will make it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'd suggest you all not to make your heightmaps in terragen.

I use the "world machine", i really like it.

http://www.world-machine.com/

And I use some standard graphics programms, too, to combine it with those erosion and those perlins of the world-machine [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

This isn't meant to be offensive in any way. I'm simply posting my current view on terragen renders </disclaimer>

Terragen is a very powerful/free program. It's designed with the capabilities to create truely breathtaking, and very life-like scenes. This, combined with it's vast amount of plugins, leaves you with a very large amount of possibilities. Then taking into account post-render editing...well yeah.

My problem is that noone takes the time to properly learn the program. They immediately start shooting out the same unrealistic, cartoony terrains with the same default cloud layers and default heigh maps. While this is cool and everything, please don't expect me to ever compliment you on this. It doesn't take more than an hour (being very generous) to set up your basic render. Hell, I could spit 3 out before anyone replies, probably.

Remember what I just said about all the power you have with this program? Use it. Spend the time to experiment with the different plugins out there. Go through the tutorials and learn about the heigh maps, textures, post-render effects that are available to you.
</rant>

This doesn't apply to massassi quite as much (but there was that terragen spree a while back...ugh), because we're all pretty computer savvy. It's not that difficult for us to poke around software and figure it out. I just felt like ranting.

Render away!!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I haven't used terragen in years. It's almost hypocritical of me to even rant like that, but seeing as I don't use it anymore, I figure it was ok.

BUT while I can no longer help with program specifics, I can give you tips on your images themselves.

My main peave about terragen renders is that the terrain almost never blends into the water. Think about why we have beaches and such. It's because the waves/wind are eroding whatever stone features where there, creating a graduality between the sea-level terrain and the higher terrain. Creating heightmaps/textures/terrain to make where water meets land look more natural would honestly make most renders a million times better. Study some of your more favorite renders, too. Pick out the things that make it look real.

I just noticed this. Then I stepped outside. The mountain (locals just call it the mountain) is clear as a bell. From what I can tell, the render is good. It'd be neat if the author could do one simulating a seattle view on the mountain, cuz it looks gorgeous from that far away with low clouds and such.

As for Dsettahr's question, well, their are a few major differences between the free version and the registered version. In the registered version, the resolution (geometric detail) of the terrain can be increased five-fold. Also, you can render images larger than 1024x768. A few other things, too, but those are the major ones.

As for Compos, thanks, I'll take what you said into consideration. I don't really like the textures Terragen puts out very much, nor the terrains. I'll work on getting more realistic terrains in there, I know mine kind of sucks. Maybe I can find some plugins that produce som better surface maps too.

Stock terragen stands out as just that. It's all the plug-ins and extra work that make a render look real.

Hmm, Which plugins? Since version 0...9x one doesn't need that water plugins anymore, the only plugin I use is that image overlay stuff.

In case your asking why its in black and white: I was going for a more "contrasty" image between the sky and the water. I achieved this using a gradient map over 80% over the red channel and 20% over blue.

indeed. the only problem is you can see the edge of the world with the water. This can be fixed by

1- always placing your scene towards the middle of the map

2-putting your camera only a few meters above surface level
