Masamune is the name of the legendary sword attributed to Date Masamune, the first Daimyo of Sendai Han.

According to legends Masamune was a fierce warrior, known for his mastery of warfare. In one of his battles, when an enemy arrow struck him in the eye, he pulled the arrow out, with his eye attached, and continued to fight. Of course, the truth was that he had lost it due to a childhood illness... a tumor no doubt.

The name "Masamune" has stuck in japanese folklore for almost 400 years know, and you might notice it's also usually the name of the most badass sword you can obtain in each of the Final Fantasy games.

Hey, you wanted to know, right Flex? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Actually, Masamune in reference to a sword has nothing to do with Date Masamune. Oh, and just to note, yes, he could not see with his right eye, due to contracting chicken pox as a child, and nearly dying from it.

Instead, it is a reference to a blade created by Masamune, also known and Goro Nyudo, who is considered Japan's finest swordsmith. His swords are often compared to a contemporary and rival, Muramasa. It is said that Masamune's were the better swords. But what was considered the greatest difference was in the nature of the swords and the men who made them. Muramasa's were said to be bloodthirsty, whereas Masamune's were created from peace and inner calm. An old Japanese folktale tells of a test between swords created by the two swordsmiths. Both swordsmiths placed their swords in a river. A leaf was cut cleanly in two by Muramasa's sword. However, a leaf suddenly moved out of the way to avoid being cut by Masamune's blade. Blades created by Masmune are generally reserved for museum's and are priceless. The Hongo Masamune was passed down within the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Everyone like their history lesson? Lol. I'm bored. And have a great interest in Japanese swords.
