MOLA being the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter. Lovely picture of Valles Marineris, as well as the Tharsis volcanoes (Olympus is just out of the frame to the lower left).

Aha! I finally figured out what looked wrong in that picture! By some quirk of terragen and/or irfanview and/or nasaview, the terrain that I imported was mirrored. Anyways, I fixed it, and then I found out how to use curved terrain. I also moved the sun so it was more realistic, but I think I might move it back so the shadows make things stand out more.

So what in that is of your making, and what is of NASA's?

NASA provided the topographical data, I did the rest. (Including the colours, which are a bit off)

Here's a new one, this one is on a much smaller scale. Not sure what this is, but it does exist on Mars.

I like the colours better on this one.

Kyle,

I like your pictures of Mars. I'm from the Netherlands and I'm also playing around with MOLA-data and Terragen. I use 3DEM to read the 128-degree MOLA data and convert it to terrain-file-format for Terragen. I work at a company for which we create a full-dome 3D animation movie about the origin of life.

As you seem to have been successfull creating a globe with all MOLA data in one, could you tell me how to do that also?
I now have difficulties doing so, and that bothers me somewhat.

Hope to hear from you soon,.

With kind regards,

GoBat, I e-mailed you a response to your question.

Hmm... now that this thread is back to first-page status, I might have to make some more pictures...

You know, I tired that with a fly-by picture of the Cydona anomalies (the Face, the Pyramid, the Cities and such) but couldn't get very good (read: face-like) results. Whereabouts might one get this MOLA data?

-I have nothing to say.

It's our All-American product. We got the idea from the Germans. The French hate it. It goes for half in Canada. The English have a version, but it's not so hot. There's cheap knockoffs in India. The Japanese are devolping a sleeker, sexier model. Made in China.

I got the MOLA data off of some site that I seem to have misplaced the link to. You will most likely need the most detailed (128 pixel per degree) images, which are huge, like 120 megs or something. Also, you need to figure out what approximate coordinates the face and stuff are at so that you can download the right ones. After that, it will be a matter of messing with the vertical scaling (which never turns out right), and the sun placement. Of course, it could be that the face really doesn't look like a face. That might be your problem.

That wasn't my problem at the time.

-I'll be sure to look for that MOLA data.
