Hey all, I don't usually showcase stuff before I'm finished, but since that seems to be the trend around here recently, I figured I might as well. THat and the fact that I'd like some suggestions/encouragement to keep me going. I have a very short attention span when it comes to projects and I'm always full of ideas just never getting round to them. My whole editing life is like one giant barrage of TCs hurtling towards me and disapearing into the distance just as fast. THat's probably why I've attempted over 100 projects over the last couple of years and I've only actually finished 1 level! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

Anyway, so encouragement and comments are welcome and appreciated. Now is the time to tell me whaht little details I should add, since there's currently still plenty of room for flexibility. Here are the shots:

I've named it Somnolence which means "sleepy" or "Sleep-inducing". It's actually a JKA level (Jedi Knight Arena), as most of you super observant people already figured out most likely, and in the center are some call spinning platforms of doom. You run around and due on them, and you can also jump off of them and into the sewers surrounding. You can even ride the waterfall all the way down to the bottom if you feel like it (although you won't feel like anything much afterwards). I've got a few interesting ideas, but I think they might be a bit ambitious. I think I'll wait and see what everyone else has to say first.

So whadya think: lighting, textures, archi, etc.... What do you like, and what do you think could be improved and expanded upon (I'll post some pictures of the sewers once I've actually made a decent amount of progress on them).

And btw, I've been working on this since last night now, or several hours.

The textures are nice, but I don't think the platforms or the water fit in well. They just don't have that same level of detail that the other textures have, or even the grittiness.

Other than that, to me it looks great. Make this level number two you've released.

I agree that the platforms' texturea aren't quite up to the level of Sine's Shibbiness (score 10 points for Sine), however I still feel they fit in quite well. I like them, and they'll probably stay that way, however this is the kind of perceptive comment I'm looing for from people. I totally agree about the water, I'll probably replace it with one of Mada's 1337 textures (may he rest in peace).

hehe, I'll try! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Well, muchos thankyous for the comments and support everyone, I'm glad that more people like it than I thought. Aside from praise, I've also received some good sugggestions for changing things (some of which I'll get to work on altering right now). However, I ask that you now go into creative-thinking mode and think of a few things maybe I could add. I know it's JKA, so it probably doesn't need to get too carried away, however, Istill think it might look a little bare.

I'm made some progress with the sewers, and I'm fiddling around a bit with dynamic lighting, so I'll keep you posted. But please, keep the comments coming. Thanks!

No, this isn't Never Never Land.

EDIT: No, seriously, I don't think it would suit the atmosphere if it was like Coruscant. I have considered making a level like that though. Still a good suggestion, I just think that's a bit too much activity for JKA level.

Inspiring. Great design. My only suggestion it messing around with the lighting. Try placing dynamic lighting strategically in spots to emmulate the superior lighting effects of newer game engines... maybe even experiment with coronas and the like.

Also, try adding very faint sector tinting to create the convincing illusion of colored lighting... I learned that from Freelancer's MLP map.

Thanks for the comments halucid, those are some great suggestions. As for lighting, this is the deal - the main area is lit by one, giant regular light, however the 3dos and sewers are lit exclusively by small, "strategically placed" dynamic lights. I really like dynamic light, and am getting used to using them more in more projcts. As for the sector tinting, I'll have to look into that. Let me see what sort of results I can come up with, and I'll post them here.

As for progress in general, I've finished architecture for the sewers, and I'm about 25% done texturing them. I tried several designs until I found one that pleased me, and I'm still not positive, so I'll leave you to be the judge of what works and what doesn't. Here are the shots:

the only thing I can think to sugenst is maby making the waterfall into a 3do and give it some depth and little bit of a curve for more realism.

Anyway, it's about time for a small update. I am now extremely close to finishing, I just have to finish the spectator area and get all the cogs worked out and I'm done. Then it'll be Beta-Testing time and hopefully a release.

In the mean time, here is the shot of the spectator area:

I suppose it's not quite up to the standard of detail as the rest of the level, but my level's already upwards of 750 sectors, and a bit over 2 MBs gobbed and zipped so I'm not sure if I should add much more.

Nevertheless, does anyone think it needs to be changhed. Any ideas for things I could add (architecture, 3dos, textures, lighting)? Thanks!
