Build time, around two hours.
849 faces, but I need to delete some hidden ones behind the cockpit.

Thinking about giving it some animations and throwing it into a DarkBasic game.

Bleh, not textured yet. Also, I just realized I'm going to have to add a joint to each leg if I want it to walk smoothly. I'll update when I get that done.

It could do with some more roundings at the 'shoulders' and at the base of the cockpit.

642 polys (polies? bah). As this is one of my first times importing a model into a game, is that a good poly count to have for something of its detail level?

Your modeling is a little 2D. Perhaps round out the cockpit a bit more, meaning the big bay area, etc. The design is generally lacking, but with the animations, it looks a lot better. It does look a bit mroe ratchet and clank than mechwarrior, though. Don't know which you were going for.

Um, neither unless someone else wants to import it. I'm using IK chains and 3dsmax doesn't export to .x format, so the animations don't show up in-game.

I'm out of town at the moment, but when I get back tomorrow I'm going to run a MeshSmooth modifier on it, which should make it a bit more organic and cool looking. (while tripling the polycount...ugh). I do see what you mean, though. I'll round it out a bit more before meshsmoothing it. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

No! Meshsmooth! *groans* The rest of the model looks FINE! A meshmooth only makes it look sloppy, and some people over use it, thus no skill is involved in their creations, and they just use subdivision until the model looks all round and fluidy. That's BAD.

Step one. Delete 3d Studio Max.
Step two. Get Lightwave.
Step three. Dominate.

Well said. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Still, the modeling program being used really isn't the deciding factor in these things.

Well.. It does when we're talking about lightwave. I make my models using what I call point by point modeling, but that's another discussion for another thread. That being said, no other modeling programs that I have seen offer a similar option. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, Lightwave is the best thing out there. For modeling anyway. Animating and Rendering may be a different story all together.

I do all my modeling in MS3D with point by point modeling now. Lightwave isn't the only one ;-)

Bill, I'd like to learn lightwave so I can do point by point, but use that in combination with the booleans. Would you be willing to teach me, or direct me to tutorials? I'm using LW8.

I use lightwave 7.5, and to be honest, it's really not that hard to learn. It took me about a week to really get the hang of the tools. I use only point by point modeling, booleaning, and beveling. That's all you really need for guns and such. After you get the hang of modeling, it's time to move on to texturing, and that isn't very hard either. But I advise working on models first. Just import a background image, place those points where they should be and make polys out of them by selecting them in a clockwise fashion and hitting p. It couldn't be more simple.

I like the cockpit a lot more, but a lot of those faces just looks like you used one of those fancy smanshy filtering functions to make them rounded. There's a whole lot of excess polygonage, and a lot of absolutelly useless sections on the rest of the body that really don't make sense.

Er...are you referring to the area above the cockpit? I extruded that and outlined it a bit to make the top look like a chamferbox. I deleted the meshsmooth modifier, and I haven't added any more to any sections of it. Oh, and the two bars you can see in the cockpit window in the second-to-last pic were hogging polies for no real reason, so I deleted those.

I can see a couple that I'll be trimming off, but can you be a bit more specific?
