My basic corridor for now..

Well somewhat focused on lighting, an dont worry! This is basic it will get for now. It will change in time. To better looking standards. My standards that is :P.

As you can see lighting is, nicely done! Textures will change. This is apart of the "SP" TC of Dark Silence: Agent of the arc.

You used a lightimage as a texture.

Also, I don't really think the lighting is nicely done.. It's lacking, uhm, what's it called.. Shadows or something.

Not showcasable. There's not even really anything to comment on. Make it look better is pretty much all I can say.

And shadows, yeah.

Now. The architecture. Good
The lightning...I dont see any really light spots...But turn it down
And if you want to showcase something...show more

But keep up the good work

keep up the good work? that'd take me 5 mins, literally! Now somebody is letting on here.... I'm sure some shadow work would look nice here, maybe some dynamic glow tubes, stuff like that - I love the structure of the wall though, I commonly use that design myself

I think it is great that he is showcasing.... we need more threads on the showcase.

The hallway looks like an excellent start.

I always thougt the Showcase Forum was a place for people to pick other's brains about what needs improvement. Not everything has or should to be a finished product.

It has atmosphere, which is great for an early WIP. It has feelings of JK's nar. Keep plugging away, and ignore the negative comments. :)

well the reason for showcase is for critism right? You know not all maps need to have very dim perspectives and have to be all shawdow. Plus the design of the "Corridor" thats the general layout. Trust me, it will look better. And it had taken me a few re-visions to make it look like this, First the room was in a octagon, then a cylender. Lastly I given up and gave it a plain ol boxy room! It will be ressurected. But I have many small designs yet to be finished. In good faith and time my friends.

I just thought I'd post because I been always saying.. I know how to map, blah blah blah.. and you been woundering whats this SP thing old crazy savur has been talking aboot? Well thats "some" of the progress...

And thanks for the advice! I know the does and donts of mapping. Will I listen to some people? Sure, but its open minded opinions. In time ye shall get some spicey looking levels!

I like it...Really much. Now it looks like something
2004-09-08, 8:56 AM #15
What I meant is that it didn't really even have anything bad about it. It's like showcasing the DFLT box and asking for suggestions. There really wasn't much to even comment on. More needs to be done on a level to change it from a test, or a concept to a start, or a beginning.

I certainly didn't mean offense, it's just that I didn't really have much to say, good or bad.

Well yeah true kirby. People dont get the right praise because of a DFLT box. Anyone can do those. But this is gonna be one step at a time map for me. I say alot about working on a SP map. But do I come to show anything of it? Nope. But here she is! And I will add more in so no worries!

I like it, but make sure whatever design you settle on makes sense with the location and storyline (assuming it's SP... if it's MP you can basically do whatever the hell you want).

2004-09-08, 4:13 PM #18
I am just doing that for SP.. I am trying to atleast put in quite a few cutscenes, the grunt work of the storyline that is.. Most missions will consist of assinations, stelath, theift, and recon..

The character himself will be a ex jedi knight.. he left the order because his master was killed and seeks justice.. In any means possible :P.. so he put himself up on the market for bounty hunting!

It looks good so far, but it really does need a lot more detail. Oh, and shadows ;p

Looks like a rather good start. It may not be all pro-like, but it's definitely not a n00b's work. Keep it up!

WTF?! My JK WIP has a hall that's almost exactly the same shape (though I lack the alcoves behind the metal girders). Oh well...

Anyway, where is the level going to be set? If you finish it right, it looks like it would be a nice Nar Shadaa (and that's where all the bounty hunting takes place, now doesn't it? ;) )

Well.. The character "Thayer Eanders - aka Dark Silence" was born and raised on courasaunt. Had the potential of being a jedi padawan. Was guided in training in secret. Master was killed. And is going rouge as a bounty hunter/mercinary as a neutral jedi. While this is taking place, the time line would be around dark forces 2: JK.

Details are sketchy right now. Just give it time. As for the mapping. They will pick up in due time. I made a finally corridoor which I should show. But meh. I will when I get to it!

Rails on the side are just too big and bulky, and totally detract from the rest. Other than that it's good. Now make more ;)

Yea. I like it better when it was simpler and didn't have the rails but thats just me...

it's good but as they said, the rails are too big, make them slender so they won't absorb your eye so much.

Keep it up.

Remember, your primary focus is gameplay, not detail and design. I'll agree, and say that the railing is a bit much. You're not creating a work of art, you're making a map.

Not really. A map can be considered a form of art. The architecture in a map really does help a map.

If anything could be considered 'art' by today's standards, it'd be level design. God knows with some of the crap people pass off as art now days, that level editing would be as well.

Well, I'll agree with that. However, I'm finding it very hard to find the different between a playable map, and a work of art. True to form deathmatch levels are rather hard to find these days.

Sure, we can make a curve that has 6 digit sides, but does the player really care in the end?

I suppose you can refer to the age-old "I make art for myself, and no one else." And I would most definitely accept that as well.

In any way, there is a kind of guilty pleasure in creating hallways, they are probably the best part of the map to create. I do happen to like your design, the concept is quite a cool one, from what I am seeing and visualizing, it feels like a hall within a hall.

Well done, but I still think the rails are a bit much.
